I just remembered this afternoon that I have a brown corduroy jacket somewhere...I got excited, until I realized I can't afford brown accessories...

Something that just popped up (in trying to save money):
Are kilt hose/flashes "required"? Is it one of those "don't wear white socks with a suit thing," or is just a traditional thing?

Preface this with "in my humble judgement" -- contrasting opinions are welcome. For a dressy occasion, kilt hose (some kind of nice looking knee socks) are going to make it look "right." Look over the casual and dressy style threads under "Show us your pics."
For my money, flashes are optional. If your socks tend to fall down, of course, then you want some kind of garter! and you'll need to be able to fold down the top of the socks.
If you have some tall solid color socks that don't clash with the outfit, you could wear them. I have some wool-blend Woolrich with a black on gray pattern: I would not wear them, even though they are pretty low-key. USA Kilts has cream hose for $10 at the moment. Email them for size info.
Woolrich picture: imagine these with dress shoes, shirt & tie. I think you'll agree that it's "not on," but I'd wear them in casual context: http://img.bellsouth.net/coDataImage...155440Sage.jpg
Cheap white hose: the cream ones from USA Kilts and others look much better, these would do in a pinch:
