The kilt is a very versatile garment & can be worn to do almost anything, but you have to be pratical as you would not like to spoil an expensive kilt doing car repairs etc. I wear my kilt everytime I go out, but all my kilts are 16oz-9 to 10yds I find them a bit warm & inpractical to wear all day in the house, so in the summer I wear shorts.

I do much the same in a kilt as trousers. I do find wearing a kilt driving long distance is a million times more comfortable than in jeans or shorts...it does away with that experience of being slowly sliced up the middle as you slump another cm further forward into the seat with every brake action. And uncomfortably sweaty to boot. A very lightweight kilt is even better in the hotter months.
I do a few messy DIY jobs and then prefer shorts that are cheap and disposable.
Wearing a kilt out to public venues is a must for me. The more people around, the better. It helps push the idea of local kilt wearing further. I get double takes, smiles, and a few overheard comments like 'See the man in the kilt, kids?' and that's all part of the joy of it. This being a 1% kilt wearing neighbourhood (me), it sometimes feels almost like celebrity status getting so much more attention now than I used to as a very retiring shy sort. Wearing a kilt has made me far more outgoing in my daily life than I thought possible.

True - but personally I draw the line when working with things that are potential disaster to wool kilts, such as brick-laying, painting, working on car/boat engines.
But, yes: wear them anytime anywhere!

I'm trying to get my husband to wear his kilt more often, but he wants to wait to get all the bells and whistles first. He says he just doesn't feel right without kilt hose and a sporran.
