If you are ever going to wear a kilt naturally, without self consciousness, as pants are worn, you will have to regard them as a simple garment.
Kilts are over-rated by most of the guys who wear them and you can see it as they walk down the street. They are conscious of wearing a kilt.
Unless you hold some cultural aspect of the kilt, I think you should get used to wearing kilts as much as you are used to wearing pants. Let the rest of the world be impressed but wear your kilt naturally.
There is nothing more imressive than a guy walking naturally in a kilt. There is nothing more pompous than a guy strutting like a peacock.
Bear, firstly, welcome back. Secondly, I'm in total agreement.

Yes: It is a simple garment, and to be worn the same as pants are worn (except way better).
Yes: Wear your kilt naturally and without being snothead.

However, For some guys, wearing a kilt for the first couple of weeks is like winning a 74' Hemi 'Cuda. You do settle into it, but some guys always get a rush even being in it and can't help but light up like a Christmas tree.

    Cheers

At one of the Highland Games I attended, I looked over at the beer tent, (A fenced off area of dozens of tables), and while there were TONS of guys in kilts, most of them were overly conscious of being kilted and not wholly comfortable.
The guy that drew my eyes, and the eyes of a LOT of women passing by, was in the centre of the area and he was as natural as can be. He was wearing a kilt, sporran, belt, sandals, and a cheesecloth kilt shirt and he stood out in a crowd of more traditionally dressed kilted guys.
I think a guy can appear more natural when wearing a kilt instead of pants because he simply IS more natural when his wedding tackle isn't wrapped up in layers. Once he gets used to being naturally garbed, his body starts to move naturally. Even his mind changes and is less stressed.
