Someone mentioned Highlander.
Now theres an idea.
Why don't we adopt the razor edge sabor as part of the kilt?
Should end a lot smart remarks.

I have two horses, a gelding and a mare, and I ride both wearing a kilt - no problems whatsoever. The only time that might be a problem is if the horse decides to stop at a jump and you keep going resulting in a nasty fall which might lead to an exposure problem.

Sorry, this horse riding topic was a wrong direction for me to go into, so I'm extracting myself as best as possible.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

All right Kelson!!
Any pics?...I knew someone other than me and Mel Gibson rode kilted...
Don't know about Kelson or Mel but when I rode I just sat my tail on the inside of the kilt. Worked fine.

I guess I could ask my sister, but thinking back to when I could see, I seem to remember the skirted riders sticking the front of their skirts under themselves a bit, and maybe a tad in the back. I think that was because of the saddle horn. I know I've seen the back of the skirt spread out across the back of the saddle and horse... Quite lovely with the longer skirts at a gallup.
Heck Ron, if I could, I'd try riding now in a kilt. Maybe one of these days.

riding...
Highland gentlemen did not wear kilts whilst riding. That's what trews were for. In the 18th century, trews were more like riding breeches. I have a wonderful illustration in Mike Chappel's The Canadian Army at War by Osprey that shows an officer in the Black Watch of Canada wearing riding breeches in the Government Sett.

Let me just make sure I'm clear on this. I am not saying that gentalmen rode with or without kilts. I'm only saying that it is quite possible to ride a horse with a skirt-like garment on and not show... things. And I'm NOT TALKING ABOUT SIDESADDLE EITHER. So I'm pulling myself out of the history argument.

My apologies -- I assumed you were asking about precedence.
