My first tank was a Walker (Yes I know they aren't highlanders) but it was in honor of my other half's family. The others I have, have been by default, I make kilts locally and have often found my self with extra fabric or a kilt which was never picked up.

My first tank was a cunniham(sp?). It was the closest I could get to Crawford. I bought it from Blooming Leather, A Ren Faire shop.

My first kilt was in MacMillan Hunting tartan-- bought way back in the 60's with money I earned by mowing lawns (at five bucks a pop) early mornings on my way to my "real" summer job at a drapery factory in North Hollywood. As soon as I had enough cash I went into JR Christie's in Santa Monica and ordered my kilt. I still have that kilt (but not my 29-inch waist!) and it looks as good today as it did the evening I met my wife Scottish country dancing nearly forty years ago.

What can I say? A best quality kilt is forever.

Being a fifth generation McGrath, I chose MacRae. Magrath was a sett of MacRae. I chose USA Kilts. Rocky and Kelly did a wonderful job, and delivered it early. It's a beautiful kilt and I have had many comments about it.

    Collin,
How does Watson fit with Wood? I'm curious because of my surname, Woodard.

I don't have a tank as yet, but I have given some thought to what my first should be. My surname is English so nothing there to guide my decision.
My paternal grandmother's family is Irish, Tracy, so I've considered Safron or a county tartan.
I guess I could make a stretch with my mothers side of the family. Her family name is Gump, which is derived from Gunn. A stretch because Gump is German.
Of course, I could give up the idea of trying to find a family affiliation with a tartan and go a different direction. I spent some time in the Army and may go with US Army, American Heritage or US St. Andrews.
Of course, I also like Irish National, Irish American and several others.
    I'm so confused.

My first traditional kilt was a 13oz MacDuff (Ancient) for my Father's surname Hume (the Humes are a sept of the clan MacDuff). I chose this one because I really wanted a red tartan and I love the flame shade of the ancient colours. I followed this up a couple of years later with 9 yard 16oz Lochcarron Strome in Modern Hume (now that's a tank!).
The Kilt is my delight !

Mine is in the Forde (Irish family) tartan, for great-grandparents of that name who emigrated from Ireland to the US in the 1890's:

I don't usually wear a blue shirt with this kilt! I threw the kilt on for photos right after it arrived...

    Thanks,

McGregor because my mothers side were McGregors. I wore it for 34 years before selling it to a new home.
