Ok, if a hat is required, what would a good scotsman wear, if it wasn't a balmoral or glengarry?

Very comfy. I highly recommend it for Aloha Fridays.

...plus, strangely enough, as far as tartan and Hawaiian flowers are concerned, I thought the shirt and kilt went together pretty well.

Hehe, that's me. Yep, I'm all about comfort. That's one of the big reasons I got into kilt wearing, really.

And here I always thought the glengarry had a more military look than the balmoral--just what kind of bonnet would be considered a "civilian" style?

I think part of the problem is that male hat wearing, in a formal context, has become quite uncommon, of late. That said, perhaps a balmoral with no dicing would be considered a bit less "military" (though that's already what ardchoille's wearing)? I really have no idea.

My preferred headgear is a khaki beret from What Price Glory, but it gets too hot in summer. Anyone know where I can get a Nice Panama Balmoral?

I know he's a fictional character, but Golly Mackenzie on Monarch of the Glen frequently wore a plain balmoral, not only with Highland dress, but also with a Barbour wax jacket.

I see nothing wrong or "touristy" with wearing a balmoral. I do own a diced glengarry (Toronto Scottish pattern) that I generally reserve for when I serve with our St. Andrew's Society colour party in parades.

I would agree with Ryan about current attitudes towards hats in general.

Aloha and plaid, my favourite outfit! I usually wear hiking boots and (now that it's here) my pith helmet. I'll post pics one of these days.

    Comfort, baby, comfort!
