Congrats! What a great opportunity, Bishop! Good thing you didn't get an early ship date after all!
I've never been to DC, but the Marine!Goth has - when he calls next time, I'll ask him about the 'must see' list.

We'll miss you at the KC games but what a great opportunity! Add to your list the old post office and/or the national cathedral when they practice the change ringing. You can't hear that just anywhere. Take some time to just hang out at the mall and watch and interact with people there. Go see the constitution and, if it is still there, the Declaration of Independence.

They are, as well as the Bill of Rights, at the National Archives. However, due to the security precautions, you have to move in a line through one door, past the document, and out a door on the opposite side of the room, and aren't allowed to stop moving.

Wow 4 pages
Thanks for the replies and ideas everyone. I can already tell that there will seldom be a dull moment while I am there. Rogerson, I enjoy running, but pass on the beer. Hashing does sound fun though.
As far as things that I really must see, Arlington Cemetary is on my must list now. It had slipped my mind but now that it has come up I think it will give me some real perspective on my recent choice to join the Navy.
A kilt night while I am in D.C. would be spectacular. I already have plans to meet with a few friends already but I would love to meet some of the dynamic individuals I have shared so many thoughts with electronically. As far as wearing a kilt to the capitol, that would be awesome but I am not holding my breath.
Thanks for all the advice

I imagine that an internship will be a fascinating experience for you BB and give you insight into how the machinery of government works.
So far I have only had a couple of nights in DC and had to pack in as much as I could, you will have more leisure to take it all in.
I agree that you must see Arlington, there is something really special about the place, but don't forget to visit the Lee Mansion when you are there, fascinating Civil War history and spectacular views.
And do enjoy a kilted stroll down the Mall from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial - just be careful near the Reflecting Pool! It was dry when I visited!

I will be in Maryland for a week or so, leaving May 31 or June 1.
The museum of natural history on the mall is interesting, but the art museum next to it is astounding. There are half a dozen Vermeers, a da Vinci or two, Raphaels, Rembrants, Rubens, etc. It's a walk through the very best of Western civilization.
For food, you can take the Metro red line to Bethesda and eat your way across the town. There are ethnic restaurants from all over the world, things well done that you wouldn't find elsewhere, such as Afghani cuisine, sushi and other Japanese, Mexican, Tex mex, Mongolian, real Italian, Thai, Greek, French, Indian, and more.
Dupont Circle, 17th Street and Adams Morgan are the places to go for street scenes.
It could be a lively 6 weeks.

And right outside the Wheaton Station on the red line is The Royal Mile Pub. Don't forget to see Georgetown. And Adams Morgan. Etnically diverse restaurants everywhere.

Well Congrats on going to DC for the first time. Did you know that the White House stone walls were set by scottish stone masons? Make sure you hook up with the DC/MD/VA rabble, they will make you feel right at home. Wow I am so jeoulous of you right now. Congrats again and have a safe fun trip!

BB - JC says to stop in at the USMC Barracks at 8th & I some Friday night for the "Parade" http://www.mbw.usmc.mil/parade_eveningdefault.asp
He also mentioned Arlington, esp the Tomb of the Unknowns, the National Cathedral and the Wall.
We'll miss you this summer; you'll have to take lots of photos and post them!

The New York Ave. Presbyterian Church:
http://www.nyapc.org/history/
Church of the Presidents, and the parish of the Rev. Peter Marshall, originally from Coatbridge. NYAPC is also the "birthplace" of the Kirkin' of the Tartans service, as Marshall is generally given credit for it.
I hope to see it myself someday.
On another note, Reston: keep us informed as to your activities this summer, and I'll be sure to pass them along to the St. Andrew's Society -- I'm sure our members would love to read your travelogue.
Yours aye,
Todd
