This is me:

And this is me:

And this is me:

And this is me:

And this is me:

The clothes do not make the man.
One's own style, flair, and (for lack of a better word) panache come from within.
The secret to pulling off any outfit is knowing in your heart that you look great in it. If it isn't a day for a kilt then wear that which you feel confident in.
You won't neccessarily be kilted, but you will still look good.
Cheers
Jamie

Dear Kilted Zookeeper, I think others have it right, wear the kilt when it suits you.
Personally I think some time off from the kilt is sometimes is a good thing, and have to agree that some jobs the kilt is just not suited to, and people are sometimes tiresome with their comments.
I am a returning member to this forum after some considerable time off from the board and the kilt.Reason being I was doing up a house that was condemed and not fit for human habitation and I would not want even my worst kilt to get covered in paint etc.
Please take heart if you take time off from the kilt the feeling will return and once again you'll feel like strapping it back on.
Best wishes.

When I first started wearing kilts, I was quite addicted to all the accompanying feelings and would have great anxiety whenever I felt compelled to wear anything else. These days I wear kilts as one of many options (opting for them more often than not when I can), but the kilt compulsion is gone.
Blame Barbara Tewksbury for that.
In part.
I like choices. But Barbara sent me a very nice kilt, and as much as I enjoy all the others, I take the most pleasure in putting on that one, the one that was made for me to my measures, stitch by hand-sewn thousand stitches.
So, yeah, go ahead and plan for that next one, consider a custom "tank," not to ameliorate your feelings of betrayal, but because you do enjoy wearing the kilt and you want to take it to the next level. A lot of people here choose quality over quantity (the few who choose both - Hamish - notwithstanding), or frequency, and that's OK too.
Regards,
Rex
p.s. Don't blame the ticks. I know for a fact that they lay in wait to pounce upon and terrorize anything warm-blooded that happens to cross their paths and they're not particular about fashions.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

I have shorts on today. Yesterday I wore a kilt. I'm NOT going sailing in a kilt, forget it.
I'll backpack in a kilt. I won't X-C ski in a kilt. I've haven't gotten "dressed up" non-kilted in a couple of years now, but I still have a couple of pairs of dress slacks in the closet.
Kilts are great to wear....for SOME activities, SOME times.... maybe even a lot of times. The fact is that sometimes pants make more sense. That doesn't translate into you being "less of a kiltie".
Regarding buying a more traditional-looking kilt.... Sure, why not if you ahve th emoney? IF YOU WANT ONE. And if you don't want one, then don't buy one.

Kilts are a choice for me, rather than a lifestyle, cause, etc. Due to my Vocation, I obviously cannot wear a Kilt every where and on all occasions. But I do wear them on almost every 'non-professional' occasion, also around the house, grocery shopping the Pub, Theatre, friends homes etc. which, at this stage of life is probably 80% of the time.
For Ecclesiastical events I wear what is appropriate to the Service, Hospital, House calls, Masses et al. And it is always nice to get home and don the kilt once more.

As a couple of others have already stated I mostly wear the kilt for special events and evenings out. I will wear my kilt at other times also, but by no means on a daily basis. I used to have to wear a coat and tie daily when I was a banker, and believe me on sunday, or an evening out on the town it was the last thing that I wanted to wear.
You said that you have several UK kilts and a generic model. Have you thought of investing in a hand-sewn tank in tartan? It might be just the kickstart you need to see the kilt as a special garment and not as something that you feel you must wear. As another said if you do go with a traditional tartan be sure to wear sporran, flashes, belt, i.e. the whole nine yards. It will definately put a different perspective on kilt wearing.
Wear the kilt when it feels comfortable and wear pants (it's ok to say the word) when they are appropriate for the activity. Remember that variety is the spice of life.

We all wear the kilt at different times for different reasons.

I think that's basically it. If you want to wear it, wear it. If you don't, don't.
