I've seen the darker one in person. Here are pictures Turpin and H Hastings at the Illinois St. Andrew's Society Highland games in their XMarks kilts - one pleated to the stripe one to the sett. They look really nice in person. (The photos are in the 2nd post on the thread).

The "Original" colors certainly are lighter. I'm not sure I like them better than the F&K tartan. The blue is just a bit bright for my taste.
On the other hand, I'm not really thrilled by the F&K. The blue in it is just a little to dark. The white seems to fade to gray making the whole pattern seem dull.
I have to confess I have a Matt Newsome box pleat in the darker Xmarksthescot tartan, but it doesn't get that much wear.
So far, I like the blue in the Holyrood tartan, which I also have. It seems to go better with hose or blue shirts. Also have a sky blue balmoral.
From the pictures, the RAF blue is also a nice shade.
Just my opinion however.

So we have "modern" Xmarks and "ancient" Xmarks, how about a "weathered" or "dress" version?
So many kilts, so little time. . . . (and little money!)
