I think this particular strangeness is well described, if not explained, by the gestalt school of psychology (q.v.).

For weeks afterwards I'd be dancing with someone only to have them exclaim at some point, "Oh, you're the man with the braces."!

Even walking around town. If I met one of the dancers they'd quite often look at me blankly when I stopped to talk. You could see the recognition dawn in their eyes and guess what they would say?

Yes, "Oh, you're the man with the braces."!

I'm another with a similar experience but it was a fedora that i wore to gaming cons, without it nobody recognized me.

At Arizona State University it was called the "MU," but I forget exactly what the "M" stood for... Multi or something like that I guess.

That was long before my kilt wearing started. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I wore a kilt on campus back then. It seems that I do remember a piper playing in the area between the MU and the library by a fountain area once or twice, but I don't know if he or she wore a kilt... It's been ten or twelve years.

    * Now that I think of it, I do seem to remember a pipe band going around campus ever so often, but like I said, it's been a good while... *
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I belong to a private club here in Frederick and most members have never seen me not in a kilt. But some days I stop in after having done something in pants and don't change. Twice now I've almost not been allowed inside because I wasn't recognised.

I maintain the heating system for the building that mr. m works in and I must say that the reason I introduced myself was the kilt he was wearing. Be cause there aren't many kilt wearers around here, I could not resist asking him about the kilt.

I just chuckled to myself. It's true... if I'm not wearing a kilt, I'm invisible.
I think it's shows a bit more evidence that there are some who don't look higher than the beltline (hmmm?), or more deeply than the weight of the wallet! Either way, you're correct about where the attention span seems to wane.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
