As a member of the SCA, and a kilt wearer, you can wear whichever tartan you want whenever you want. Anyone who gives you guff doesn't understand kilt history at all. Tartans were never reserved for any one family.
Go for a wool, about 6 yards, a little less if you are slight.

Greetings and welcome to the forum.
I wear a great kilt (6 yards) when hiking in the hills behind us in the late fall and winter months (I wear a tank in the warmer months.)

Welcome to XMTS!
About that GK and/or anything or any gas you might hear. You won't hear anything from people with any sense or an ounce of decency about 'em. It's the ill minded and weak which you're already a mile ahead of. So if you hear anything, 99% will be uplifting and complimentary. That other 1%, well, choose your own skirmishes.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
