actually, Barb, how would you pleat this tartan as a box pleat, to the sett or stripe? A while back, Rex described the tartan to me.

At about 6" for the sett, it could go either way. If you pleated to the stripe, pleats would be 2" across with a 1" underfold on each side. That's small, but OK. For a medium size guy (40" hips), that would give about 10 pleats across the back. If you pleated to the sett, you'd have a pleat every 1.5 setts, or every 9". Each pleat would be 3" across with a 1.5" underfold on each side. For the same size person, you'd have about 7 pleats.

If someone would be happy with either size pleat, I'd do a test pinning to see which I liked better. For this particular tartan, there aren't any pesky clusters of little stripes in either of the main blocks that might disappear if the pleats taper much, so either one would work.

And, just a shameless plug for Matt's and my new instructions for making a box pleated kilt. It has a nifty little table on page 18 that outlines pleating options for box pleated kilts for different sett sizes, which can be useful if you're thinking about pleating for a kilt even if you aren't planning to make it yourself. Thanks Barb! And I have been reading over that PDF.

I guess you have to decide which stripe to pleat to if you are going that way, and with this tartan, I think that would make several very different looking kilts whether knife or box.
On the other hand, it might be best to have the sett across the pleats with this tartan...

Guess you could start saving for a second kilt after you get the first one.

I've put all other kilt and spending plans on hold now that the Bear Tartan and fabric can be reviewed here; that makes a huge difference.

Last year, The Bear Tartan was discussed in Riverkilt's thread, "The Tartan of Pride" Then the discussion was moved to Aldisimo's thread, "The Bear Tartan" I think it had come up before on the forum, though; just as a little history of the discussion.

You hit that right on the spot! Brilliant! The mirror-imaged multi-color stripes would work perfectly in a reverse kingussie!

Convert the asymmetrical design into a symmetrical one. It's like converting matter into energy! lol. Or the more common saying "turning lemons into lemonade."

The blacks stripes will end up radiating away from the center of the kingussie pleats. (The original picture is actually upside down - the selvedge is on the top of the picture).

HOWEVER, having said that, the Bear Tartan may not lend itself well to showing the multi-color stripe as the main vertical lines shown in the pleats - mostly because it is thick (wide) and may cause some unnecessary busy-ness in the pleat display.

I shall try to pin it in various ways to show off certain aspects of the sett. (I'm excited)... Being couped-up indoors during this The Inauguration weekend --- that may provide me with something to do (as if I didn't have plenty already) lol.

Also, Chris (aka "beartartan" on XMTS), the creator of the Bear Tartan design, had just become a member here(I partly influenced him to join) and he explained a little bit of how the tartan came about. See Post #5 of the thread here.
