Howdy,
I always carry one when I shoot. I use it to hold my shell bag when I'm active in a station.

Kevin,
So is it a thumbstick with a spiked end?
Cheers

I have one... haven't used yet. I used to use for hikes back in the old scout days, mostly for testing ground ahead and probing areas for snakes....
I did get one recently, one that stands tall. As an avid macro photographer, I plan to remove a quick release mount from a tripod and install on the top of my walking stick. 2 birds with one stone... have a stick for hiking and a monopod for my camera. It's not so comfy going on a large hike with a tripod strapped to your back.

Stick
Currently out of necessity due to a blown knee. Once my surgery (knee replacment) I shall cary a stick because it pleases me to do so.

I don't hike while kilted - or is that kilt while hiking? My one kilt is reserved for special occasions for now.
When I do go hiking, I use a hiking staff, about 5 feet tall.

I'm in the same boat as EagleJCS, although I'm trying to reform my ways.
Usually my kilted experiences find me 'piping for something, so a stick wouldn't work. When I hike, though, I always have a stick of some kind.

"What other bit of kit can brush a bit of rubbish aside with a flick of the wrist..."
Instead, why not think GREEN and leave no trace behind. Bend over, pick that "bit of rubbish" up and pack it out to the proper receptacle. Using your cane/staff/stick for proper support and balance whilst doing same. Just a thought to all of us that with desired swagger or not we all need to be thinking about our environment.

Does anyone know of a source in the US/Canada for hazel stick blanks of the type that McMurdo is holding above? I recently found a nice horn crook and now just need the hazel stick blank.
Cordially,
David

I have two walking sticks that I use all the time, kilted or not. One is a nice light but sturdy rattan cane, the other is the Cold Steel polypropyline version of the Blackthorn stick. A heavy bugger probably more of a club than a cane, but it looks great and feels good in my hand.
