Offtopic question. Was there really that few tartans used around the time of Culloden or that they weren't recorded? I've always wondered.....anyone?

Usually that refers to the tartans that we can document (265 years later) as existing at the time; which is a fairly stringent requirement. We know there were more tartans about, but few people were recording thread counts.
