Sorry to hear he's busted a wing. At least he can still get off the couch to get his own dang beer (or what we-who-know call "Vicodin Helper"...)
Don't be too harsh on toeclips. I started riding with them in 1969 and feel naked without them, so it's very definitely what I'm used to. I have reflexes to deal with them and don't want to learn new ones.
I also never sit up in bed, courtesy of spending a couple of years in a top bunk very close to a concrete ceiling. After trying to sit up to turn off the alarm for four mornings in a row, I had better reflexes there, too. That was 1979-81. I still always roll on my side and slide out. Can't break the habit.
(I also still laugh remembering the "Oh no, not again" feeling of waking up halfway to the ceiling on the third and fourth days...)

I know this is how he feels too. *sigh* let's hope his reflexes improve.
you'll have to forgive me, but the image of someone smacking their head against the ceiling when they wake up is just killing me! Though I do feel bad for your head

Wait, toe clips or clipless pedals? I'm deathly afraid of toe clips, but I twist out of my clipless pedals so easily they don't worry me. And I'm old and slow.

After twisting my ankle while riding my bike last year, using toe clips and having worn running shoes on, I removed the clips. Now just have plain platform pedals. I may eventually switch to clipless pedals, but, I know that I might forget to clip out when coming to a standstill, which would cause the result mentioned in your original post. At least, in my case, I didn't fall, but my foot bent in an unusual manner, causing the damage.

he's got clips on his shoes and egg beaters for pedals. For those that don't know what egg beaters are, they are just a circular set of clip holders without the traditional flat pedal surrounding. They actually look like egg beaters. So he's fully committed.

That is one of several varieties of "clipless" pedals, meant to allow you the same ability to push down and pull up on your pedals simultaneously to get more power in short bursts when needed, just as the original pedal "toe-clips" with or without straps were (and still are by some )used for. IMHO clipless pedals are easier to get out of, once trained in using them, that are toeclips +/- straps, as well as more efficient, and both are more efficient than but also less safe as standard flat pedals.
As a historically heavy (280#--no pun intended) cyclist if you ride frequently on or off road you will want to go to clipless eventually. As a tip on how to learn to do it safely, try starting out by only putting the left clipless pedal and shoe on first and riding with that and a flat pedal on the right for a while, remembering to always lean to the right (flat pedal) side when you slow down or stop, while simultaneously practicing clipping out of the left clipless pedal. After a week or so, switch it and go clipless on the right and flat on the left and always lean left when you stop, til you get used to the clipless unclipping technique with the right foot. Once you think you have it mastered put the clipless on both sides and have a go at it, remembering to unclip early rather than later when you may be slowing or stopping.
Nothing funnier than seeing a clipped in rider stop at stopsign or light, and tip over sideways to the ground becasue they forgot to unclip. But like your mother says, it is only funny until someone gets hurt.
Hope the hubby mends quickly and that your family life returns to normal soon. Oh, and that beer he needs is called a Vicodin chaser.
Sorry for the brief thread hijack. We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks again everyone I'm teaching him that there is more that he can do one handed than he originally thought
He's a real trooper actually, not one to lie around doing nothing even when injured. I got lucky
