I'll just add my two cents worth here...mind you my words are not golden...

A great friend of mine told me when I was preparing to buy my first kilt that anyone with experience can literally see the difference between a 13 ounce kilt and a 16 ounce kilt. And the 16 ounce kilt will hang, and move, and, just generally, look better.

    I think he was right.

Congratulations and I feel your pain. I joined the forum earlier this week seeking advice on a first kilt / wedding attire and had to pull the trigger bout 18 hrs. later! It's like I was hypnotized or something. I ordered 3 from SWK! I mean . . . I had no other choice. I'm going to need to make a decision in the next week or so about my wedding kilt so that there is time to make it. Like you I'm leaning towards a 16oz tank. Take it easy and I wish you the best when it comes in the mail. I've got my fingers crossed for Monday on my own.

Thank you. It will be great once it arrives.
You said you have 3 on order from SWK? That is great! You really did get bit by the bug. Monday is almost here
Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials! My wedding will be in the spring so I still have a little time yet to get my tank. But sounds like the time is ticking for you. So, have you made you decision yet on which kilt you will get for your wedding? There are a lot of choices to make aren't there? It's a good thing we have a place like this to go to get help with our questions.

I figure that besides the kilt I should get a belt and buckle. A nice leather sporran and some Ghillie Brogues. I'm going to look into having my hose knitted by a family friend. Does this sound like a good start to everyone?
I'm just getting back to this thread, I'd say the starter stuff would be as follows:

    Sporran

Like you said a good leather sporran is the way to go, however just a thought for you, perhaps you should go for a semi dress or dress sporran to use for your wedding. If you do go for a leather sporran my advise would be to go for a Freelander Sporran. Here is mine

    Jacket

I would say a dark tweed might be just the thing, a lot of guys go for the Prince Charlie coatee for their wedding, however in truth the Prince Charlie should only be seen after 6pm. That is why I suggest a dark tweed. You can get one from USAKilts. If you want to go for thhe Prince Charlie or a Black Argyll with silver buttons USAkilts has those as well. I got mine at a local tartan shop as an ex rental sale, you may be able to do the same. Here is what I'm talking about.

    Hose
I think it's great that you are getting a friend to knit you hose, however I think you may need more than the one pair, so that is why I've included this in the list. If you just want a pair that will do until the hand knit ones are done then I'd say go with WBSocks they are an ebay seller. If you want some good quality hose at a reasonable price I'd say go for the Lewis Line of Hawick Hose from the Scottish Tartan Museum
    These are from WBSocks

    These are from Hawick Hose

    Belt and Buckle
Again USAKilts and the Scottish Tartan Museum could help here or you could also go to Jerry at Stillwater kilts
I got my dress belt from RKilts
and my buckle from Oconee Leather Works

I hope this helps you out a wee bit.

Well . . . Once I decided that I wanted to get kilted up ASAP I couldn't make up my mind between the standard and the economy and I also couldn't decide between the Black Watch and the Nightstalker - so I just pulled out the Visa and got both. At that point, what was $28.95 for a thrifty Wallace? (it is summertime after all) I think I gotta go with Campbell Ancient for the tank. So, it's unlikely there will be a problem with inventory no matter where I go as long as I don't procrastinate too much. And yes - this place is proving to be a great resource. My iphone battery hates this site. Hopefully I'll have some pics tomorrow for those who are interested. Time permitting, I might even try posting a "newbie" caparison of the swk thrifty, economy, and standard. If no one has done it yet, it might even be comical to see what the untrained eye thinks about three bang for your buck PV starter/supplemental kilts. Again, good luck to you and thanks for the well wishes.

Coming to the thread a bit late myself, and while reading I kept thinking, "Pool lad, he thinks he's only getting one kilt..."

I ordered my first kilt from Scotweb. Within a day I decided the Jones was too strong and ordered a Stillwater. It sounds like you're going down the same path.

I agreed that the next purchases should be sporran and belt. Freelanders are great but can be a little pricey the first time if you're trying to put together a whole kit. My first sporran was a Buzz Kidder (about $50). I saved my "serious" sporran money for a semi-dress sporran for my tank.
Consider ebay for some of your purchases. Then, when you're good and addicted, you can start replacing pieces as you need/want. A Freelander, Thorfin or Wyvern (sp?) sporrans are fantastic options when the wallet starts to fill back up again.

If you're considering a crail style jacket, you might also consider getting a second hand jacket you like, and having it converted to a kilt jacket. There are several folks on these boards who can do that for you for much less than the cost of a brand new jacket.

Looking forward to your first pictures!
