A friend of mine was asked "The Question" once by a woman who was well into her cups shall we say. He responded in a somewhat passable Scots accent "Well, madame, bein' a man o' few words". He then reached down, grabbed the hem and lifted the aprons and showed her his Sponge Bob Squarepants boxers. I thought the woman was going to faint. He then smoothed down his kilt and walked away like nothing happened.

I've started to use the old and proven 'that's none of your business' and go on my way.

because, well, it is none of their business, and it simplifies things, no more trying to come up with clever/witty things to say.

    "What's under your kilt?"

"A wee set of bagpipes. Do you play?"

    Works like a charm.

My stock answer has been "Pride, and Scotsmen are men of Great Pride" but now I have a few others I can use!

It wasn't always that way. There was a time when men only got slapped around the face for this kind of thing, and there was never any question of legal action, but that all changed back when I was only a teenager. Doubtless some of you are too young to remember, but in those days nobody had ever heard of such a concept as sexual harassment. Women would speak of WHT (wandering hand trouble) and perhaps even refer to such a man as a wolf in the US, but they would never call the cops, who may not have done anything anyway.

However, if you were to slap a woman across the face for lifting your kilt, you'd probably be up on assault charges, so that's not an option either. Actually, lifting your kilt is an assault, but I agree that I wouldn't press charges for that.

    By Choice, not by Birth
