    Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the next meeting of the HR folks regarding proper clothing in the workplace. Could be fun to listen in.

    Thanks, MrBill. I do in fact have one. Just need to unpack it, once things are no longer in transition in my life.

    Ok, update. I was just called in by my supervisor. He then informed me that he had contacted the management team which had created the new guidelines. While he acknowledged that it was a cultural expression, and that skirts are allowed, he said that they stated that kilts are not. He would give me no other explanation or attempt to explain this in light of the written guidelines, cuz that was what he was told.

    Sounds like blatant discrimination to me. Either they allow skirts or they don't. If it were me, I'd say fine, I'll comply, but I want it in writing from HR. Then I'd send that to my lawyer.

    I know we're big on the "it's not a skirt" phrase here on the forum, but according to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

    • Main Entry: 2kilt
    • Function: noun
    • Date: circa 1730
    1 : a knee-length pleated skirt usually of tartan worn by men in Scotland and by Scottish regiments in the British armies
    2 : a garment that resembles a Scottish kilt

    If the guidelines did not state that skirts could only be worn by women I would be bloody minded and go in wearing a skirt!

    And I suppose pants can only be worn by men? I see an EEOC suit;

    Turn this around and it is clear that such a ruling would violate the intention of the law. If they have a rule it needs to apply across the board for all employees, not just males or females. No shorts OK. No skits OK. No men's skirts not OK. Just MHO.ith:

    Thanks for your support, compadre, and your advice, guys. I am requesting that this instruction be put in writing. For a long time, I had wanted to check the company dress code to see if wearing the kilt to work would be a problem. At least now I have one to work with. I plan to pursue the matter, just to see how far I get.

    Btw, I can't help but wonder if it's a coincidence that the management consultant whose name was given me as the source of this decision is a very English one.
