I think for the kilt to survive, it has to be accepted by the younger generations, If this means “pimping” it up and making it attractive to them well so be it, I think Howie has done a lot for the publicity of the kilt. Even here dress hire shops are actually stocking kilt wear as its popularity has increased again. Any thing that make it wear more acceptable is a good thing.

That is not a price that I, for one, am prepared to pay, even if it was necessary to do so and it is not. The tartan kilt is doing very nicely, thank you.

Yeah, traditionalist, or pragmatist, i am not sure pimped up leather kilts will save the traditional tartan kilt with the younger generation. I would think the intent of spirirt of wearing the leather or the wool would be very different and I am not convinced there'd be switching from one to the other easily. I have been wrong many times before, just this morning in fact. Now could i see a situation where soeone rocking a leather kilt normally would wear a wool for their wedding because of a sense of familiarity? Yes i could see that.... but it'd be more their sense of occasion taking over.

Maybe it's just me, but Axel Rose is the one man I have ever seen that didn't look "out of place" in a black leather kilt...and well, axel,.. haha

I've been to Oban several times over two trips and I like it, especially at sunset. It's just a few miles east of the MacIntyre ancestral home at Glenoe, close to Taynuilt.

Great shots glad you had a good trip to Scotland.

I do not see that we need to discuss the different types of kilts in this thread, the original poster certainly did not ask about it, this was simply a thread about a holiday with photos. XMarks is a kilt forum that accepts both Traditional and Contemporary Kilts. It is after all a matter of choice. In the past the differences between the two camps Traditionalists and Contemporaries have caused problems on the forum, and hurt feelings etc., lets not let this report of a good holiday devolve into a spat between the two camps.

My apologies for contributing to the digression.

We all have thing in common, we're jealous of our friend recently returned from Scotland no doubt.

I'm also jealous of the people who live there I think :P

Simply pointing out the pitfalls to future visitors to Scotland, so as not to spoil their hard earned holiday here, that is all. However, I have no wish to stir up a hornets nest, I will therefore, desist from making any further comment on this thread.Sorry if I have caused an upset.

Well in Inveraray this afternoon I spotted a bloke in a kilt, tartan 8 yard knife pleat, looked like a well made kilt from a distance so no complaints there, he had matching hose, flashes and sensible shoes, colour coordinated shirt to fit in with his kilt, all in all he would have passed for a local, except for the fact that he was wearing a dirk on his belt, spoillt the whole outfit, and gave the impression that he was obviously a tourist.

Never got to speak with him, but odds on he was a colonial cousin

Wait a minute! I happen to be a "colonial cousin" and I would never walk around anywhere outside of a reenactors camp wearing a dirk. That statement seems a bit presumptuous to me. Your implication is that those from this side of the pond are clueless rubes and native Scots are naturally inclined to fashion correctness. I call BS!!! And, as far as I know, this thread was not supposed to continue in this direction.
