I prefer the look of the belt, except when wearing a waistcoat or pullover sweater. As others have said here, I feel it completes the look.

To me, dress/evening wear with a jacket/waistcoat aside, no belt = you're wearing a skirt!

Having said that, I'm 50 next year and would consider myself half-dressed without a belt whatever lower garments I'm wearing!

My philosophy is: If a garment has belt loops, a belt should be put through them. If it does not have loops, the belt is decorative and therefore optional.

According to many distinguished kilt makers on this forum, the loops are made for the sporran belt ONLY !

    Best,

    My thoughts exactly!

I was taught that wearing a waist belt threaded through belt loops on a wool kilt has the potential of pulling the kilt out of whack; wool being a malleable fabric. But many kilts made of PV have belt loops included. The danger of a waist belt tweaking a kilt made of PV or canvas is minimal.

If you are going to wear a waist belt with a wool kilt, simply fastening the belt around the waist and not through loops is the best way to go.

So i guess the moral of this thread is... it's ok to not wear a belt with your kilt if you're holding a chicken !

Friday morning I attended a meeting of the Scottish Tartans Authority, USA, before the Stone Mountain Highland Games in Atlanta, GA. In addition to my kilt, I wore dark hose, garters, a brown leather sporran, a tattersal shirt, solid color lambswool tie, and tweed Argyle jacket. No belt. It was a perfectly fine, professional, and well put together look.

Of the kilted gentlemen in attendance at that meeting, about half did not wear a belt.

But only if it's a free range chicken!
I seldom wear a belt except on the most formal of occasions. Since I wear waistcoats most evenings I don't wear a belt. Only when I'm wearing very formal wear that 'require' a belt do I wear one. It's more usual for me to wear a belt with my UKs and other modern kilts.
