    Red-faced it is...or should I say scarlet!

    red/scarlet / rouge / bloody

Somehow, what that beautiful doublet calls to my mind is GREEN WITH ENVY. And now I am just disappointed, because ( as per usual) this jacket will not make it across my bulky frame:

    Off to do some PT...

So what is the story behind the origin of the flaps on the doublets?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

There is or was a piece of armo(u)r, called a tasse or tassette, a plate to protect the thighs, suspended from the corselet and overlapping, if my flickering grey cells are still working. I am fairly certain the piper's flaps come from there. Consult any good sword and sandals movie, or BLACKADDER BACK AND FORTH and check out the Roman Soldiers' garb. I believe a series of leather panels will remind you of ye flappes.

Oh goody! I finally get to use my book on medieval armor, thanks.

I think the Roman skirt armor is called pteruges.

Wow! The doublets really did evolve from the styles of Medieval armor. That's interesting.
