Ryan remembers correctly, I did have a jacket and kilt made up from the second option. (I had the vest made in a complimentary solid color). These were not for myself personally, but to model the line for the museum gift shop.

If it helps make a decision, here's what it looks like in an outfit.

That kilt, by the way, is a four yard "casual" kilt. So it only has 195 pleats. :-)

The jacket and waistcoat were bought by Lamar Britt and he does wear them with his tartan kilts, and the combo looks great. So don't discount wearing the waistcoat with a tartan kilt -- it may not be your idea to do so now, but if you choose a good color/pattern you'll have that option down the road.

As for which I'd pick -- well, to be honest, I'd make the decision by showing both to my wife and asking her which I'd look better in.

And as an unrelated aside, I feel compelled to point out that these fabrics are not actually tweed, but worsted wool; the patterns, however, are inspired by typical "estate tweed" patterns.

(And as an even further aside, though the jacket & waistcoat from my model outfit have been sold, the kilt is still available -- size 36" waist, 24" length, just PM me if interested).

I like the top one the most. As others, I like the warmer colors.

Hey Rock, any way we can get a look from a distance? I'd like to see more of an "overall" type look....

I'm guessing though you just have these scans, and no material actually on hand??

Second one, more dignified colorset, more versatile.

I don't care for either of them. But, if I had to choose one, I would go with the second one. The first one is too yellow.

It's not my taste now, but I would hold the option open if I found a tartan in my closet it worked with.

Kelly's vote is for 'option 3'... neither they're both hideous. She's not a big fan of 'busy' estate tweed tartans and such.

That's part of what drew me to it... the ability to make a traditional kilt with traditional cloth out of a non traditional pattern.

The only thing buggin me (to a small degree) is the lack of a kilting selvedge... I'd have to hem it.

Not QUITE that skinny anymore. I'm coser to a 39.5 right now (hoing to get down to 38 for the wedding). I'm also probably going to do an 8 yarder...

Sure... step back from the monitor a few feet.

I have swatches, but the swatch itself will get too small if I took it from a distance. Matt's photo is the best representation of the second one 'from a distance'.

My first thought was to go with the bottom tweed. After seeing Matt's version, I'm convinced!

I would have to go with the top. I saw Matt's kilt and jacket in person, and it looked (to me) just a little too busy with those colors.
That, and I have ordered a suit from Matt in a tartan similar to the top, so I may be a little biased.

Since joining X Marks I have learned to appreciate tweeds. I have been haunting the local thrift shops looking for tweed jackets, I have found two that are just my size and brand new. One is going off to Virginia as soon as she finishes my formal jacket, soon I hope I hope.
