I won't comment on the pictures, but I did find it interesting that several of the comments on that site were from people who seem to think that a real Scottish kilt is supposed to come to the bottom of the knee.
And one poster seemed to think that the Utilikilt was a "real" Scottish kilt because it had a kilt pin over the naughty bits? I think he was referring to the snaps on the front of the UK. The guy obviously had no clue about the construction or wearing of a proper Scottish kilt.
It's depressing, seeing how uninformed the general public is about kilts.

That's funny ...considering I think that's the LAST place I'd put a kilt pin .

Glad you mentioned that, because that lack of information is why I take such great offense at the idea of anyone hijacking my kilt to be an identifying symbol of their lifestyle.

- Intolerance for our fellow human beings, of any kind, is inexcusable behavior in today’s world.
And some of the comments I have read here to me are no different than the snide comments on the PoWm site. Except for the fact that it's kilt wearers doing it which to me is far worse than the uninformed people commenting on the PoWm site.
Am I being intolerant of your friend, or am I being intolerant of any implied association between lifestyle and a Scottish cultural icon? Consider that very, very carefully before raising the flag of intolerance. Respect is always a two-way street. Your buddy is probably a great guy, with a great sense of humor, and I'd probably have a helluva good time BSing with him over a few beers, skirt or not (tho I'll admit I'm more likely to sit next to him, than across from him, if we're chilling in deck chairs ). My objection has absolutely nothing to do with him, personally, his lifestyle choices, or any of the like.
If he has "kilts of various lengths", then I assume he has some kilts that sit at the pants waist, some that sit at the natural waist, and of the latter, perhaps some with a short rise, and some with a tall rise.
If, by "length", you are referring to where the hem falls on his leg, then you and your friend are mistaken, as he may have a kilt or two, but the rest of them are skirts, and he is crossdressing, and I would greatly appreciate it if those two terms remained completely unrelated to my kilt. Please note, I'm not referring at all to shendyts or any other culture's manly unbifurcated garments...only kilts.
Now, if I start caterwauling about how your buddy is the offspring of the devil because he's a guy and he likes to wear skirts, then you and everyone else here can feel free to bust my chops, because I would certainly deserve it.
But I am not. I don't care if he crossdresses. BFD. Go read my post again.
What I do care about is misappropriation of my kilt as an identifier of lifestyle choice.
...And quite frankly, at this point I'm not even sure I should have brought it up. The focus of the original post was on the UK anyway, and I'd say the guy in the UK wears it well. The guy in the skirt...who knows if he'd even call it a kilt? For all I know, he'd call it a skirt, and if he were wearing a kilt, he'd call it a kilt.
Furthermore, my decision to wear a kilt at home, with friends, or in public has absolutely nothing to do with men who wear women's clothing...I don't care why they want to, who they are, or where they do it. I really don't. That decision should have absolutely nothing to do with my kilt, so frankly I'm surprised that you'd assume I (or anyone else here) would hold a different opinion simply because we wear kilts.
Finally, as regards Forum Rules #4, #8, and #9, if you think I'm being intolerant, then by all means call me out!...as I'd prefer to explain myself or apologize. I may be opinionated and outspoken, but I try not to be intolerant of my fellow humans being...and note that #9 bluntly states that this is the wrong forum for discussing crossdressing. It doesn't say "you can't use that word" or "you can't identify someone in a linked photo as a crossdresser" or "you can't say that crossdressing has nothing to do with kilts". It says that this isn't the place to talk about crossdressing, and it isn't.
Perhaps this would be better viewed as a territorial dispute between wearers of men's unbifurcated garments, than a landmark intolerance case.
So please, gentle readers, keep all that in mind next time you feel compelled to label someone as intolerant, simply because they called out a buddy of yours for crossdressing in a manner reminiscent of a kilt, when this is a forum about kilt-wearing.
I'm not sure if I'm sorry I even brought it up, or if I'm glad I mentioned it. I might even owe your friend an apology, since he was only circumstantially involved in the original post in the first place, and I'm making assumptions from a position of absolutely no information whatsoever, regarding the circumstances surrounding his photo . So, to your buddy, "I'm sorry I brought it up!"
Hopefully that long-winded post explains why I'm not running afoul of Rule #4, and you understand I'm in no way looking to run afoul of Rule #2, and will keep us collectively from ending up on the wrong side of Rule #12!

Wow, what Sean said !
I'll add that I am not 'intolerant' of cross dressing, guys that want to wear some female attire don't bother me at all, but I do take issue with calling what is obviously a womans skirt a kilt. The fellow in the photo is frequently seen in various MUGs on the interweb, often wearing what he'll call a "14 inch Sportkilt", which I think is what's in the Walmart picture. The only thing SK offers in 14" length is a woman's Mini, so call it what you want, it's girl clothes dude.

I think you're right, and it demonstrates how mainstream Ukiltwearing has become.
There are probably a great many photos of men wearing Ukilts at WalMart that nobody thinks worthy of mention or notice.
I work in the tourism industry in Southern California and I see, literally, tens of thousands of tourists every day, and it's very common to see Ukilts being worn and they don't get much in the way of attention any more. They did when Ukilts first appeared but no longer.
