No, "invariably having six legs, and sometimes having extra mutent legs," might describe the situation.

A transistor always has at least three connections: whether it's PNP, NPN, MOSFET, or which ever kind. You can only take the insect comparison so far because you can cut the legs off of an insect and it is still an insect. If you cut a leg off of a transistor, it can behave like something else; perhaps a diode or possibly a resister.

Oh! How did I get involved in this! Defend your own self, O'Callaghan!!

You just reminded me of a hilarious line from the movie Chasing Amy..."What's a Nubian?"

I think "a Brazilian" is less than a Sagan.

    * And yes, I know Sagan never said it, it was Johnny Carson spoofing Carl Sagan who came up with "billians and billians."

My daughter said to me a couple days ago "Feed me! I'm Hungarian!" She was joking, of course... and is nowhere NEAR college age! Kids... This was shortly after she bit me on arm, grinned and said "I'm a piranha, and I eat MEAT!"

    Mmmmm. Tastes like chicken!

Now I'm dreading my boy getting his teeth.

    Three legs good, four legs.....

AT the risk of sending everyone to sleep, a Field Effect Transistor (FET) has four leads. Three are similar to those on a regular transistor, with the fourth called the body, substrate or base. It's usually tied to the highest voltage rail of the circuit.

And then, there is the filament, cathode, control grid, screen grid suppressor grid and plate. Most of the equipment I worked on in the 60s Navy was tube type. Just starting to
    see transistors.
