Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
I would venture to say it depends on how you wish to promote the kilt. If your business is predominantly meant for the special occasion, i.e. Weddings, New years, Burns night then possibly it's not necessary to have an employee kilted. However, if you wish to promote the garment as an everyday choice, it isn't a bad idea to wear your wares. I wear a kilt everyday in my shop, staff at Macleods Scottish shop down the street from me does as well. Rocky and Steve are kilted too. I would venture to say the staff at utilikilts do too. Maybe a North American thing

Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
I know that there are quite a few kilt shops where they are not worn by staff and where reliance is placed upon the mannequins in the shop window.
But they will never show how they move. I also am amazed that where you have a shop promoting and selling a quality garment that offers a different perspective on male wear that you can find in so many other places that what you can find in so many other places is that which is modeled.
Whether or not this has an effect upon sales is surely secondary.

Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
From my own personal experience of the Royal Mile this year, those male employees in the Tat Shops, who wear the kilt, do not wear their own product - they all wear good quality kilts.
Make of this what you will, but that is what I observed.

Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
When you go to buy a tuxedo the sales person is not wearing a tux. But they usually are wearing a suit. If these kilt shop men were wearing a pc and a kilt with tartan hose a dirk it would make one laugh because they are wearing clothing that doesn't fit the formality of the event. But if they dressed like Rocky (I have never been to another shop) you would be able to see the quality and style achieved by wearing his kilts.
This shop owner seems a bit daft. If he has his trousers up his bum over the risk of being associated with the tat shops then move away from the royal mile dont limit you staff from wearing a kilt.

Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
The (very) few quality highlandwear shops don't have their staff wearing kilts. When I enter a fishing shop I don't expect to see the staff wearing waders and holding fishing rods so why should a clothing shop be any different? It seems to me that a substantial proportion of the staff you see in Royal Mile "kilt" shops are wearing turbans anyway.

Re: Kilt Shop Employee Not Allowed to Wear Kilt to Work
So if you head out to Harrods you wouldn't mind seeing the man selling you a suit wearing cargo shorts a t-shirt a hat and flip flops?
If you went to a fishing shop your not going fishing. Therefor wearing fishing attire and holding a fishing rod would be quite odd. But if you went to a quality upscale kiltmaker you would expect to see a kilt.
In Scotland is kilt wear ONLY acceptable during funerals and weddings? Would one wear a kilt to a nice fancy dinner? What about to the opera or something comparable?

As I think I said, the only upscale quality kiltmakers I know in Edinburgh do not have their staff wearing kilts. As to wearing kilts generally that is a subject that has been discussed interminably in other posts. I would say, though, that few if any kilts would be seen at an opera in Edinburgh. I have seen the occasional one at the theatre but that is unusual. A formal dinner dance might well attract many kilt-wearers whereas at an informal dinner it is much less likely. Whether this chimes with your conception of everyday life in Scotland I do not know. All that I do know is that it is a fact of life here.
