Re: Smoking
I bought them from Pfeifen Studio Bulentini who are based in Stuttgart. It was an impulse thing. Saw them, liked them, bought them. You know how it is.
The pipes I bought are hand made, 9mm filter, Italian Briar wood, 1 curved and 1 straight. They feel nice in my limited experience and they smoke just fine. I particularly like the filter system which I haven't seen before (last time I smoked a pipe was 30 years ago). They are stamped "Royal" so I don't imagine they are particularly special . They came with a leather pipe pouch for two pipes, a leather tobacco pouch, a pack of Dr Perl pipe filters, a pack of pipe cleaners, a pipe 3 part tool and steel lighter. Oh and 5g (yes five) of Wild Cherry mix. Nice smoke too. Bit sweet for my tastes and only enough for a single fill but not bad. I'd probably splash out on 50g if it was available here... just to make sure.
So far I've found I'm quite partial to Mellow Virginia from Benson and Hedges. mainly because it's easily obtainable in most shops, draws nicely, doesn't burn too hot and isn't fierce at all. I don't like some of the heavier Black tobaccos.
oh yes it does... undeniably.
I still find my life is a bit too hectic to smoke them all the time but when I do get the odd 30 minutes to myself (outside of course) it's nice to have a quiet smoke. I might get better ones as time goes on. We shall see. I've also found an independent tobacconists in my home town who are more than pleased to help and advise.
Have you and Herminator met up yet? He's only up the road from you... I'll let you both know next time I'm heading your side of the channel and maybe we can do a meet-up. I've no idea when that might be though.

To have a reliable tobacconist is definitely a plus. Mixtures and ready rubbed are a good start for a beginner, easier to handle than flakes.
I didn't meet Herminator, at least not knowingly. But it could be that we were at the same pipe shows. I just asked him if he comes to Lohmar on march 31st. It would be nice if we could meet some time.
To 9mm filters. That's a german phenomenon. Vauen (Dr. Perl) invented them in the thirties and makes a bunch of money of them. I got rid of them several years ago. I still have old pipes for it, but I just don't use them any more (the filters, not the pipes). I only buy now pipes with standard drill. They look way more elegant than those for 9 mm, especially those with bamboo shank, that I love dearly and have quite a collection of.

Oh, yes it is. And then comes the drawer full of different tobaccos. I have friends having stashed so much tobacco, that it can last a lifetime.

Re: Smoking
My father whom I loved dearly smoked a pipe all the time I knew him. After he died (not smoking related) I ended up with his pipes. I started smoking them but I was aware that most young guys with a pipe look like goofs so I never really got in the habit of carrying them with me. I smoked at my desk in my home office and in my car. Pretty soon I was smoking a LOT!
I did start to notice some impacts on my health so I decided to stop. I would not say it was easy but certainly nothing as difficult as I have observed in friends trying to kick cigarettes. I did not smoke for about three years. I did not miss it like an addiction more like an old friend. So I decided to bring it back into my life but only only as a treat on very special days. This has worked out just fine. I keep a pipe and tobacco just for special days that are about me, and what I want to do, usually hunting or fishing. It adds a significant pleasure to my enjoyement of the day but does not add up to more than 20-30 days a year.
I still have a couple of my Dad's old pipes. Even though I have smoked them a hundred times with the mild Danish style tobacco I prefer I can still taste his old Erinmore Ready Rubbed in the first few puffs,

Re: Smoking
I've sold my humidor.
I used the proceeds to buy a very nice briar bulldog bent-stem pipe, and a pound of the most pleasant tobacco I've sample to date (locally blended "Honey Bucc" is what it's called, I'm also partial to their black cavendish and that will probably be my next purchase). I've replaced my humidor with two pipestands, a cheap briar pipe (Yello Bole) and my nice pipe, which I swap out with... and a nice well-sealed jar full of tobacco.
I only smoke once, maybe twice on the weekends these days - friday "Cigar Night" and Sunday morning with a book and my morning coffee. The pipe is a much more practical choice. And, quite economical at that... even with the pipes and a pound of tobacco, I think the price came out to about 1/2 the price of a box of decent cigars - which I would go through in about 2 months.
I'll probably still enjoy cigars - just not enough to own a humidor and "collect" them.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Great, if pipes are well cared for they can last several lifetimes.

The dreaded crossover, but there are some Lakeland tobaccos that are way more intense in crossover.

Re: Smoking
I too miss my pipe. The cigars never really had me as much. Seems there more romance to a pipe. Had to sign a "no smoking clause" for the job so I'll have to live without it for a few more years. Still love the aroma of a great blend.
