Hah- That would be crazy, for sure. Seriously though, a reasonably sized drinking horn (mine holds a solid 20 oz.) is a pretty darn fun gimmic, at parties, highland games, etc. Really any place where you're going to be milling around and not setting down your drink, anyway... and I find that it gets you free drinks, in fact.

Take another look at the project. Old grave stones show that they were quite common in Scotland, in the far-distant old days.

Yup. I had intended a hammered copper lid for mine, and a belt hanger that would allow me to get portable...not for the Texas one! (I'm only 8' tall-you know how long those horns are?) Jelling Dragon across the water makes a lot of fittings-and fitting ideas. I only go back to 1680 though...they probably were out of style by then. My new idea is to make a flattened powder horn that appears to have been constructed from a "salvaged" drinking horn-adaptive reuse, I am thinking.

The bees were busy in my yard all winter--desert broom, then rosemary bushes, and now they're going after the citrus blooms. Next will be the California poppies and spring wildflowers.
I wonder which plant flower makes the best mead?

* I like mesquite honey, but I don't drink.

I've always been a big fan of Mead. Chaucer's, Oliver's Camelot Mead and Redstone are all good, but I'm a particular fan of B.Nektar Mead. They are putting out a VERY wide variety of meads. Everything from sweet orange blossom, to dry, barrel-aged meads. I really like the Vanilla-Cinnamon, the Strawberry Pizazz Melomel, and their Bourbon-barrel aged Mead is incredible! What I'm drinking most lately is their Zombie Killer Cyser. A blend of Mead and Cider with some tart cherry juice to cut the sweetness. If you're a fan of Cider, I highly recommend it.

That is an awesome horn. Mine is simple. I also have a 3 foot tall one for community drinking.

Not sure if I know how to attach pictures here. We have a long horn for drinking in a "mead circle" at a camp out every year. My wife is the reining mead queen for the past 5 or 6 years. The title goes to the woman who drinks from the mead circle with out leaving, except to pee, from about 10 pm until 2-5 in the morning when everyone else passes out!

What honey makes good mead? All of them.

Not really. It depends on what you want from it. If the honey tastes good, it'll make good mead. Bad tastes in the honey get magnified in the mead.

I know this will be sacriledge to some but though my wife did not care for the mead she loves the mixed drink...

Equal parts mead and Mountain Dew in a tall glass with ice.

I have to admit, not bad.
