Actually, it's more like the object permanence thing. If they don't make eye contact, you don't exist. Hence, they don't have to feel awkward and acknowledge you are wearing something that makes them ill at ease.

BTW, I'm trying to picture what one would actually look like wearing a quilt. I'm sure it has to have box pleats.

Free drinks are nice, but the best comment I have ever heard was the New Years we went to Atlantic City and I was decked out. PC and all proper. I was walking into the casino and an elderly woman crossed from one side to come over to me. She motioned me down where I could hear what she said. "I just love seeing a man in a proper kilt". It took me a second to understand her through her heavy accent. She smiled and then gave me a kiss on the cheek. I think I walked a little taller all night because of this.

My step-father is Mexican and was laughing at the IDEA of me wearing a kilt. So I pointed out what the Aztecs wore. He stopped!

The first time I went out to a Tartan Day celebration two years ago and my girlfriend and I went to one of the local shopping malls afterwards. She was pretty uncomfortable being in public with me wearing the kilt, I on the other hand was having a ball. A women comes from across the cosmetics department over to us and says, "I'm a Campbell too! Nice Kilt!" My girlfriend starts to take a little more notice and the salesgirl behind the counter starts telling us about her Scottish heritage. I was enjoying the heck out the whole deal!
Only a few of the men we encountered would make any real eye contact!! lol!!!

I have to say that my favorite has to be from when I was hiking on some local trails. The full story is available through one of my previous threads. I was headed uphill when a young lady that was running on the trails was headed downhill past me. Just after we passed each other I heard a ruckus and turned to discover she had actually fallen and rolled part way down the hill.
Then there's the woman that I used to work with and still see occasionally due to both volunteering through the Red Cross. If she knows we'll be at the same even she sends me a text message to find out if I plan to attend kilted or not because as she puts it "If you're kilted I can't wear a skirt because your legs just look too good and I feel self conscience."

I wear my full kilt uniform to greet at the Utah Opera Productions. I get "I come to the Opera to see you in your kilt" "You look dashing" and "You make coming to the Opera a real pleasure, thanks for wearing your kilt" It really makes me feel like I have added a bit to the occasion.

After a Winter golf competition, went home changed and showered, went back in kilt, ghillies, aye ghillies, ecru hose, aye ecru hose and Argyll jacket and had a loud cheer when I entered main room.As if my chest wasnt puffed out already. Went to the bar and was checked instantly and congratulated to much hilarity.

I've had several variations on this scenario: A lovely woman comes up to me and says, in a low voice, with dropped eyelids and a suggestive lean towards me, " I love a man in a kilt".

As I have often explained to those who question my predilection, never have I experienced a similar situation where a woman has seductively said to me, "I love a man in pants".

And, there is always Donna, the proprietor of my favourite Toronto pub, the Caledonian, who never fails to make me feel special for wearing a kilt to her establishment, and who chastises me for the times I end up there without being able to kilt up first.
    Cheers,
    John

On the way to "The Real Mckenzies" concert, a young woman and two young men were approaching me (mid 20s). The lady kneeled and bend down sideways, as she would like to perform a kilt check, with the smile from ear to ear on here face. The lads were totally confused; watching me and her with no clue what to do.

It was nice and encouraging. I was the only kilty in the audience.
I like the breeze between my knees
