I began here by posting that photo, thinking that it would explain everything.

To me it does, as a ceremonial and traditional decoration I think they look great, as they do in this photo.

But as an everyday item to be worn with a kilt, whether for reasons of "protection" or carving the Sunday roast, well I think that is asking for trouble.

I grew up as a lad wearing a "sheath knife" on my belt, I understand the macho type reasons why it feels good to wear such a large blade.

However, our world has changed, and not for the better. There are greater restrictions on us now than ever before. Blame the terrorists if you will, whatever, but the fact remains.

I prefer the peaceable option where I live, of avoiding such trouble, it's a luxury I can afford here in Tasmania. I realise that not all of you have that privilege.

If you want to take a big knife (or gun) about with you it might be worth remembering the words of Jesus, "they that live by the sword, shall die by the sword".

Whatever your choices, and they are yours to make, please let us try to be kind and considerate to one anothers' views.

    Graham,

I most heartily agree that avoiding as much trouble as possible is the best policy. Some times, trouble just won't be avoided though.

While Jesus did indeed say that those who live by the sword will also die by the sword, those were not his only words regarding self-defense. I refer you to the 22nd Chapter of Luke, verses 35 and 36.

35 ¶ And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

While Christ expects his followers to give up their lives for their faith, he said nothing in favor of throwing away our lives by not defending ourselves from criminals.

BTW, I don't claim to be a theologian, just an old gun crank striving to live right and walk in ways pleasing to Him.

Good point Doc, I cannot argue with the verse. Some say that the word used for sword indicates more of a 'machete', a tool more than a fighting weapon. But I wouldn't want to be dogmatic on that, the major commentaries don't support that view.

If true, it would explain an apparent contradiction (there are no real contradictions in the Bible) with that verse and the events in the Garden where Peter drew his sword. (but then, what was he doing with one we may ask?).

I'm not opposed to self defense, I'm a pacifist, up to a point I have a gun and would use it to defend my family if there was no other option.

Alaskan Celt, I think your question is far enough off from dirks that it should be a seperate topic. I will start a new topic "For Gun Friendly" under kilt advice, and give what I can for advice.

The topic of guns is far enough off kilts to be in "off topic", better still - off the forum all together.

Maybe it's my Canadian upbringing, but I am of the opinion that guns don't have any place in this forum. There are other venue for that discussion.

I consider myself a pacifist, with a knife, as a tool, on my belt, in my pocket or in my sock.

Maybe it's my British/Australian upbringing, but I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Guys, in all fairness there are those that like to exercise their right to be armed. These people may want to wear their firearms with their kilts. While you and I do not support it, they have the right to ask the question. However, I too think it is better suited for the off topic section, only because I have seen this argument explode many times.
