I couldn't understand, that with all those kilt shops in business, why was I one of only a handful of guys kilted in the city.
I'm with you on that one I was also very suprised that I did'nt see more people in kilts.I wrote about this in my "He must be a tourist" Posting a week or so ago) Maybe Scot's have the view that they should "Keep it for best."
As regards to the shop I mentioned I was charmed by the old fashioned (cramped) little shop which had a lot of very fine things in them, which saw to my un-trained eye to be real Quality.
When I bourght my kilt, I took a chance on Hector Russel. I didn't know who they were at that time so I felt very nervous when handing over £700's for my outfit and not even trying on a kilt.I shouldn't have because the result was great .(See my Gallery).
Ps, We are going to Inverness agian next summer (Yes I'm saving already )

Hello Steve and congratulations! Glad your first public outing was a positive one. You've certainly done more on your first outing than I did. BTW, if you haven't read the essays and editorials over at

you should. They are a kilt-confidence primer. I trust there are no known problems between your girlfriend and the kilt.

Thanks for sharing the story Steve, and welcome to the board, good to see you.
The kilt looks great, what tartan is it?
We can all relate to your nervousness going out for the first time,
It only gets better and better.
This forum is the best support you can get for wearing a kilt more so feel very free to use it (and us) as much as you like.

Hi Giraffe. Glad to hear you are coming to UK.
On your way North you are likely to be driving within 5 miles of me inNE England and we may be able to meet up. I am, unfortunately, unable to offer you any accommodation. I spend a lot of time in Edinburgh and I may be able to meet up with you there - lunch?
By all means telephone me on my home number - (UK) 01642 - 361266, or at the office on 01642 - 555763.
If we cannot meet up I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Welcome, Steve! I think we've all felt apprehensive the first time, kinda like a three-legged cat surrounded by a pack of dogs! Kilting is addictive and becomes less contretemps than one might originally think. Great to hear that your first public appearance was a success.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. As you have discovered the biggest obstacle to get over is all the imagined negative responses we may get. All I can say is wear your kilt like you mean it and enjoy.

I've already posted some of my 'first timer' stories but here is something that happened today.
I was in getting my chance at the $100Million lotto his afternoon and a guy came in and stood behind me. The next thing I know he said "Scottish, Irish or transvestite(sp)?"
I turned and laughing at the last one, "Scottish ancestery."
The next thing he asked was "Were there games somewhere?"
I responded "No, just wearing the kilt."
He got quite at this and just said "Oh".

Thanks to all for the kind words and support!
