I hope that you guys in the US understand that the monarchy is only a symbol and carries little to no power in any of the countries they represent. They are the original celebrities. We respect (??maybe not the right word) them to celebrate where we came from, not to be a subject.

Yup Colin, I know that. Seems an extravagance to me, but it's not my money I'm sure some of our icons seem similar to you.

The young man who started the Royal discussion, buried his Grandmother yesterday, 7 years after he buried his mother. I have only entered this post to suggest we leave these 'kids' alone, it must be hard for them, wherever they are on the social ladder.
    Cheers Rhino

Rhino, I'm with you on that one. Since they were born they couldn't sneeze without media going nuts over it. Things like privacy and a personal life have to be very difficult for them.

That is where we have to differ (slightly) Colin. As a Royalist, I am proud to be one of Her Majesty's subjects.

As you should Hamish. That is the difference between the British and Canadians. You still have that culture in the forefront, while it is the starting point of our past. The royals have very little presence here, but we do still turn out in droves when they visit.

The only time I can recall Americans getting up much interest in the Royals was over Princess Diana, don't really understand why. It just isn't a matter of interest here.

    Regimental Tartan

Gents, forgive the new boy here for speaking his mind without being introduced, but Prince Charles WAS wearing a regimental tartan that day -- the Stewart Hunting tartan is the regimental tartan of the Royal Scots Regiment, and one territorial battalion of the Royal Scots, the 9th, otherwise known as the "Dandy Ninth" did wear the kilt, as opposed to the rest of the regiment's battalions, who wore trews in the days of the First & Second World War. Princess Anne is their colonel-in-chief.

Granted, he should have worn the Government tartan that day, but at least he was wearing the tartan of a regiment, and the oldest regiment of the British line to boot -- "Pontious Pilate's Bodyguard" is their nickname, first organised in 1633 by Sir John Hepburn under a warrant from Charles I.

And to the monarchists on this board, take heart: I am a Yank, but a Yank monarchist!

    Cheers!

    T.
