    Sometimes exceptions need to be made.

    My brother married a McFarland girl and there was a part of the wedding ceremony where she was given the Clanranald sash as a way of welcoming her to our clan. She rightly pointed out that in this day and age my brother would be joining her clan also. They found an old tradition of the father of the bride presenting the groom with a sword with which to protect his daughter. Having no practical need for a real sword, the father of the bride presented my brother with a claymore shaped McFarland clan crest kilt pin as part of the ceremony. He wears it with pride. Now if she had been a Campbell... ;

    My personal view is that mixing Tartans looks somewhat unsightly and as far as mixing Clans goes I would also say that this is A No No!
    When I first got serious about kilt wearing I bought Black Watch Tartan flashes to match my Black Watch kilt,after more research I bought original Military Surplus Black Watch flashes (Red Wool) and I now wear them all the time when I wear brogues.
    I find that they go well with everything.
