It's been really nice and interesting reading all the replies on this post. My article has done what I hoped it would do, which is provoke an honest and open conversation between members. I've had some very nice personal message exchanges too, most notably with Father Bill and Nathan.
The concise, detailed and thought provoking responses on this post just goes to highlight how diverse, interesting, intelligent and proud XMTS members are.
A really big thank you to everyone who has read and/or replied.

Great thread, old school and new.
I have a Bulgarian set of bagpipes made out of apple wood. Bagpipes are played in Scotland, Spain, Bulgaria, Sweden, Africa, etc. For the pipes some use African blackwoods, hemlock, crocus, bones, PVC plumbing, goat horns, etc. Just to get the bagpipe sound. Bags are made out of sheepskin, dogskin, goatskin, pigskin, vinyl, plastic bags, no-bag-circular-breathing, etc. Reeds are made of wood, plastic, carbon fiber, bamboo, phragmites, etc..
Over here in the states where there are no old traditions regarding kilts, there are support sites encouraging real men to don kilts of any design, really as a statement of individual determinism. Renaissance reenactors don kilts from acrylic to wool, punks don PVC kilts and stagger happily and quite pissed through the streets of our cities, and folks like me off in the yon country wear utility kilts, traditional, whatever we can get ahold of.
I'm old school when it comes to Bluegrass music, but I appreciate Newgrass when wonderfully and skillfully played. To use a euphemism, it's great to drink single malt highland if that's your style, but nothing wrong with tipping back a stone jug of Georgia moonshine either if you happen to be a redneck.
I think kilts, all style, are great. It's wonderful that some have inherited a kilt from their own father, just unbelievably solid and good. It's great that others of us don't have a clue but jump in the water head first.
It takes a real man to wear a kilt, and that's just too cool.

I can only speak for myself, but although I may be someone who falls pretty much into the traditionalist camp, I can tell you that you wear your kilt well and I really like the style that you have chosen.
