I ordered the khaki Lewis Hose from the Scottish Tartans Museum a few weeks ago. They are more an olive green to my eye, and I was hoping for more of a tan. But I like them just the same.

Oh great, spend $128 for two pair of "green" hose....hope not. Trusting that if they label their color as khaki then the color really is "khaki." Guess we shall see, not even an acknowledgement yet - let alone a shipping notice.

Will see what shows up and letcha know.

I've about given up on Scottish Tartans Museum. I can't think of a single time they've replied to any of my emails. Also, with one exception, when I've done on-line orders with them days pass without acknowledgement, and then I get an email saying the items are out of stock and put on back order, then I never hear a word about the items again. The one exception: they did deliver a book once, but never acknowledged the order, the book just showed up.

Khaki in the British sphere is different than what Americans usually think of as khaki nowadays. To them it's greenish-brown, to us it's tan, more of a bread crust shade. I wouldn't be surprised if you do receive greenish-brown hose -- if you ever receive anything at all.

Reading the definitions of Khaki and the shades over the years can be scary...but on the website the picture of the khaki Lewis hose "appears" to be tan-like on my monitor and that's what I'm hoping for, that the color they show is the color I'll receive....

Yes in British military usage "khaki" usually refers to a colour similar to our "olive drab".

British "light khaki" is tan, the colour we call "khaki". Kilt hose in a tan/beige colour have long been standard, called "oatmeal".

I can see this leading to misunderstandings.

Here: khaki jacket, light khaki shirt, lovat hose

Here's a contrast in hose within the same regiment: the darker khaki of the pipers contrasts with the light khaki/beige of the Pipe Major (in the puttees too). Note the army socks have plain ribbed turnover tops.

And the various socks worn in the army in WWII in colour... pale beige, mid-khaki, and lovat depending on regiment

This wide variety of shades over time and cultures is why I'm "trusting" that the color shown on the STM webpage will have accurately depicted the shade they are selling as khaki.....

Still no word from STM so emailed to be sure they got the order...got an apology for no response and an estimate of 2 to 4 weeks for delivery - they have to order them from the mill....so acting as a middle man despite the nice display on the webpage.

By way of modest and simple etymological clarification, the word khaki is derived from the Urdu/Persian word for "dust".

And as far as an alternative for light-colored/warm weather kilt hose, I personally and very highly recommend these, from an excellent eBay seller in Ontario, Canada:

Wow! Thanks for the tip on the trachten hose. The Kilt Kops would have a fit knowing a guy was mixing trachtenmode with traditional highland dress, but if you kept your distance, you might avoid a dressing down. I'm going to place an order.

I used to think STM might be cool, but the more I try to do business with them, the more I'm inclined to think they are kind of a fly by night operation. It's the no-name suppliers who seem to be giving the best customer service, from my stand point, with the prominent exception of two or three X Markers.
