Mel,
I think most folks have answered well. I have a sportkilt hiking kilt and I use it for hiking or wearing around the house. It is the lightest kilt I own, but I even refrain from wearing it for walks around the neighborhood because it just looks too much like a skirt even with belt and sporran. It definitely lacks the swing of a real kilt. I just got a USA Casual Kilt in the Celtic Nations tartan. It is not as light or as cool in the heat as the sportkilt hiking kilt, but with a belt and sporran it looks pretty good. I just walked through the neighborhood this evening wearing it California style (no hose, just sandals/flip-flops). The USA Casual kilt is definitely cooler than my 8 yard wool Edwards cilt and I think even a bit cooler than my 5 yard wool US Navy Edzell kilt. Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks. I'm now more inclined to getting the same one in the same tartan but I'm aiming for next summer now.

I own a USAK casual in the Holyrood tartan. It's a great kilt. It looks good, wears well, and fits well. I wouldn't waste my money on a Sport Kilt, honestly. I've handled them. They are not worth it for me personally.
In fact, since I've received my wool kilt I don't even wear my Casual Kilt anymore. Not that I don't like it, I just prefer my wool kilt in my clan's colours.
I'd like to sell my USAK Casual Kilt.
Any takers?

We'll look for your sell ad on the forum soon....
But, for those that have both types, utility and otherwise, kilt on and show us your many styles and uses for this OP.

I've now bought a USA casual in Celtic Nations. Thanks for your opinion.

I'm late to the party, and you've already made your decision, but for the benefit of anyone else following the thread; If you're just looking for a grilling in the backyard, hiking, mowing the lawn kind of kilt, the Sportkilt is OK. The only option I would bother with is the sewn-down pleats. It's great for what it's designed for. But, to get the sewn down pleats in an XL (my size) the $60 kilt becomes $97. A USA Casual in my size is only $22 more. All of a sudden it's no contest. For an extra $22 you get a much more versatile kilt.

Never too late. I guess my thoughts followed a similar logic. By the time you add on the extras it's not worth it.

It's never too late. You're comments are still appreciated. You are right. I followed the same logic. By the time you add all the extras, it looses it's appeal.

That's encouraging. I think I'll have to stop buying kilts for a while. I need smaller shirts. I'm still wearing pre weight loss shirts which are 2 to 3 times too big.
