I know the traditions that have grown up around these, but I've never actually seen anybody challenged in my 31 years of uniformed service.

Has anybody ever actually seen a coin check?

    Regards,
    Cardinal

The Mississippi Viet Nam Vets motorcycle club Chapter Y have several coin checks at the rallies when other chapters attend. It keeps the new members on their toes followed by stories of particular circumstances in battle. I can't say that I ever experienced the same in public. The military coins are for those that "know" and seldom shared with civilians.

I have many challenge coins, almost all of them were given in appreciation for service rendered in a certain command. I have them from all branches of the US military and a couple from foreign militaries with whom I have served. Despite my many coins and several from high ranking officers, I have never been challenged at any Officer's Club or local drinking establishments frequented by military personnel (and I have been to many such establishments.)
By the way, I too would like an X-marks coin.

I have never seen an "out of the blue" challenge but when out with friends/ acquaintances I have seen it reasonably regularly in public settings and at military events.
I always carry at least a cheap/ "throw away" one and will pull out a better one if I am going to an event where I would expect to be challenged.
For the Chiefs Birthday [dinning out] last spring there was a Challenge for wives/ husbands/ S.O.; fortunately I had provided the fiancee/ now wife with a coin to answer the challenge [which she keeps in her wallet all the time].
