I'm interested in the story behind the first sporran McMurdo. Does the ring on the front serve any purpose? Did your girlfriend's grandfather do the leatherwork himself? The design has a south seas look about it. Very interesting to my eye. I rather wonder if matching leather ribbon tassels off the sides of the sporran and perhaps off the ring in the front would be less distracting to the beautiful leatherwork?
All I know about it was that he got it on one of his trips back over to Scotland, Bill was from The Isle of Barra. He was an award winning carver making sgian dubhs however I do not know if he carved the sporran, While this has become a favourite of mine, if Bill had carved it, it would be even more special. I do not know why the ring is on the front but I will not be removing it for fear of damaging such a unique piece. For this reason I would not do anything with the tassels either.
In a small world way, Bill was also a neighbour to my parents when they lived in Cobourg Ontario and my father took carving lessons from Bill. I also have a sgian dubh that I know Bill carved an Argyll jacket that was his and his hand knit kilt hose.

With that kind of background story, you are right to keep it as it is. It is very special.
