I am in the same boat. I was unaware of what the Outlander was, so I asked my wife, she gave me a sideways one eye half closed look and said," You would not enjoy it."
I trust her judgement and left it at that.

Personally, I much prefer the books. I find the characterization extremely well done. As Thistledown said, the historical research is also impressive. The books are also much less concerned with graphic sex. I would recommend the books to anyone...with this caution: her writing may spoil most other books for you.

It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea, that's for sure, Jock. You said you arrived home just today. Did you watch all of Season One in just this day? Phew, that was a marathon! Ah well, if you didn't like anything about that season you won't be missing anything if you give a pass to Season Two in its entirety IMO. But I can't abide East Enders and that's popular, too. Fortunately, we don't all have the same likes and dislikes or this would be a terribly boring world.

Actually Rex we did two and a bit episodes. It was the time travel bit that caused us to start on the downward slope. The leading lady is certainly easy on the eye and neither Mrs Jock or I are prudes, but costume dramas are not really our thing particularly with the re-writing of history and that theme really stretched credibility too far. We don't do East Enders and that ilk either.
No doubt in time to come this sort of fanciful drivel will be quoted back at us as "fact" and we have had too much of that already in Scotland in my book.

Like jhockin, I also enjoyed the books more than the film, but then I would much rather read a good book than watch TV any day. I've never been into science fiction or for that matter reality shows, or horror films (is there a difference?) or really TV in general, but the rest of my family makes up for that! However having bought the first book originally for my wife, I sort of got sucked in and have read them all, albeit over a prolonged period of time.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

It's called Fanatasy, Jock. Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars that sort of thing will be out of your comfort zone, too, then? Scotland's history has had a tough time in film, though. It's as though our past wasn't stunning enough, isn't it? Niven's Prince Charlie, Gibson's William Wallace, Neeson's Rob Macgregor -- such a lot of twaddle mixed in with the real. There's a gulf between Scott's Tales of a Grandfather and the tales grandfather's really told. But this thread is about today's street clothes taking a cue from the fantasy film, not about the accuracy of the film's report on history.

I was only replying to your post Rex. I am afraid I have no knowledge of "The Game of Thrones", or "Lord of the Rings" but I have endured "Star Wars" on occasion when the Boys and the Grand Children have been staying. My goodness me, how many of those films are there? I have yet to see one that has at least a modicum of interest.
Indeed Scotland's history has had a very hard time with the film industry and the cringe factor is almost inevitably painfully present in my experience.
My views on todays clothes based on fantasy films is on record elsewhere in this thread.
