I respectfully disagree. I could wear it tighter but I have an obsession with comfort. It might not slide to the side as much but...I also have a shaved head with less friction. These are pretty thick and the wool does weigh the enough to pull it back.

I am not wishing to poke a hornets nest here and I also understand the need to protect yourselves from the sun, but I really do fail to understand the very apparent need for you chaps outwith these shores to seemingly almost obsess about wearing a bonnet(balmoral/glengarry) with the kilt. Why?

Because it looks cool...
But I will only go so far for looks. They are too hot to wear here during the summer.

Well alright my question could be taken that way.
But, I hope to have some sensible answers as there really does appear to me that there is yet another trans-Atlantic trend here that does not follow Scotland's lead. Does it really matter? No, but I am interested.
Yes, the bonnet(general Scottish term for a hat)is worn by pipe bands and the military, but it is fairly unusual for civilian kilt wearers here to wear a bonnet unless there is a real reason to, like stormy weather, or perhaps a dandelion carried behind the Clan badge, or some identification device on rare occasion. In my experience over here, bare headed is our usual civilian choice when wearing the kilt even in damp, informal or, formal conditions.
AND PLEASE let us not discuss flat caps!

Bonnets and glengarrys are gateway garments in my experience. It starts with a simple piece of headgear, next thing you know folks are wearing Prince Charlies and white hose when attending brunch

I wouldn't say that I obsess, but I do tend to wear a bonnet most of the time. I guess I wear a bonnet because I come from a family of hat wearers. My father, grandfather, and uncles almost always wore hats. That being the case, I wear hats as well. When kilted (other times as well) it's a Balmoral. I also developed quite a habit of wearing my "headgear" while in the Army. I'd say that these are the two main reasons. Nothing to do with a "cool factor".
