I was always under the impression that Halloween was a time to dress as ghosts, ghouls, goblins, witches and scary historical figures.

I feel the same way. I remember being really young and people were saying they were going to go as Buzz Lightyear and stuff like that. Each time, me thinking, "But that's not a ghost, vampire, skeleton or werewolf.". I don't even celebrate Halloween and even I know they are not correct costumes.

Kids these days regularly dress as Jedi, Avengers, and power rangers.
Literally any and everything is on the table these days.

I think it was said best in the movie Mean Girls: "In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it."

You sat through Mean Girls? You actually watched that? I just, saw that on Netflix and skipped right by it.
If you want to go as a Scotsman, buy a Scottish themed costume off the internet. I've seen it from time to time.

Multiple times, as a matter of fact. It's pretty funny, has a great cast of actors, and sometimes you just want to watch a funny, highly quotable movie.
And I hope you realize that if someone buys a Scottish themed costume, they'll end up wearing what you tout as impeccable highland dress.

I took possession of this piece of forest on Halloween 1998. Perhaps I should celebrate this year and beg for candies dressed like this.
