Panama hat? I'm disappointed. Surely a pith helmet is the right answer. I'm sure I've seen photos of Scots wearing them! It MUST be traditional!

I prefer the broader brimmed straw hats to the classic Panama for a bit of extra protection from the sun, but anything is better than a wool bonnet when you're standing in the summer sun all afternoon judging pipe bands (at least in the United States).

That said, however, there comes a point where I would knowingly break from such purity of tradition if it makes sense to do so.
Agreed.

If a wool kilt is too warm for hot climes I would think that a wool bonnet to keep the heat in would be even worse. A straw brimmed hat such as a Panama is often worn by Scots in such places, and definitely wear a pith helmet to a memorial for the Indian Mutiny, but otherwise that's costume. To us.

What a fascinating thread, one of the best I have read on XMTS! I have not contributed a great deal to it, but I have followed everything quite closely. Jock, Thistledown, and Tobus have all made very interesting and thought-provoking posts.
As for me, I just muddle along doing things as I always have.

So I take it a wool brimmed hat like a nice fedora is out of the question?

Nothing is out of the question. I like fedoras but I can't say I've ever seen one worn with a kilt in the Highlands, or by kilted Scots anywhere. But I do know the owner of this forum wears one in Victoria and looks pretty good in it (polishtheapplepolishtheapplepolishtheapple).

Probably because fedoras aren't in fashion across the pond? I don't know. Hahaha.
I love my bonnet, but the past highland game I had to get my wide brim felted wool hat to cover my face. Ya do what ya can.

No, but we did develop some pretty strange headgear, you must admit. A little boat-shaped thing called a Glengarry that kept you neither dry nor warm (no worries about it as a sun-shade) and a cloth cappie thing I think we adopted from the English, just to name two.
