    Thanks for that insightful post.

The picture is a photo, not a painting. All three men have some medals, and military stuff. I don't know who they are, but they are big fellas.

I agree. The great kilt is probably not an ideal indoor garmet. Spend more time out of doors!

I don't wear a lot of modern clothing. So if I wore the great kilt, I wouldn't be wearing it with nikes... Cause I own none. I dare say it would look nice with my Birkenstock clogs. And I don't wear ball caps much, if ever at all, which is a plus.

As usual, Matt's post is full of insightful advice. I feel that if you were to wear the great kilt in your day to day life, it would be much like you were wearing colonial era clothing on the street. While there is nothing stopping you, it would certainly be seen as out of place. I have ordered a great kilt from Celtic Croft, but I will probably only wear it for renaissance fairs or enactment events. To me it just has a more "historical costume" feel to it.

Amen. We've done everything we can to master the environment and then sequestor ourselves from it. I'm literally planning a major career change largely so I can get out of the cube farm and get out there.

I wear plain black shoes and kilt hose when I'm at work to keep management happy. But as soon as I get home, the shoes come off and the sandals go on. OK this is no good for cold weather but as soon as it is warm enough for bare feet, I'm getting them out there!

I haven't seen anyone mention yet the Ancient Kilt, BTW.

If a few of us start wearing these things we may need to lobby Hank for one more extra message board to talk about this stuff.

Matt, I just wanted to thank you for your thorough and insightful response to this topic. As you alluded to, there is a lot of "bunk" to sift through and it's good to have someone with some authority on the subject here.

I've been thinking that maybe the great kilt has a place in the modern wardrobe, but until it catches on as such it will look very odd indeed, even to other regular kilt wearers. I'm thinking along the lines of something to wear when I'm spending a lot of time outdoors. Hiking, taking the kids out for a nature walk, etc.

Some brave pioneers will need to experiment to find the right "look" for a modern philamor, just as we have already learned what works with the modern tailored philabeg.

And then there is the whole concept of a solid great kilt (or even camo...) mwahahahaha!

Bear with me here bro... I was just suggesting if some of us actually start wearing them on a fairly regular basis, it would be useful to have such a board. Right now I think it deserves little more than individual threads like this one.

I still think the idea of break away pleating has merit. Snaps or velcro to hold the pleats in place, quick and easy. So it can be whipped out and used for other things. Like a 2 inch section of velcro under the belt to hold the pleat in place. Or a couple of snaps. Box or knife pleated.

Wow. 10/11 oz worsted wool... $32.95/yd, 60" wide

    http://www.thescottishweaver.com/woolplaids.html

Anyone see a problem using this for a philamor? I know Matt is saying 4 yards is enough... I'm thinking maybe 5 to play it safe because I'm 53" around. That's pretty darned affordable.
