Might I suggest getting a copy of Barb Tewksburys book "The Art of Kiltmaking and take a shot at making your own or, failing that, find someone locally willing to do it according to the book. Some of us on this board have been doing that and it pretty much can cut the cost by doing the labor yourself.

Hey Erik Dad here. Just a little info for you, your sporran is a semi formal. Or a wear it where ever you want type. As for your classmates objections, I would like you to sit back and give some thought as to what your dear old Dad mite say to such an opinion from a non kilt wearer.
Anyways we'll talk later, and check out my sporran I just finnished, it's in general kilt talk.

Sporran or not to sporran that is the question. In this day of traditional and non-traditional kilts the question seems to answer itself

To me, not wearing a sporran is for the ultimate summer casual, t- shirt and sandals, kicking around days. I still prefer to wear one almost all the time. It's good to have one semi sporran to cover all the events. A lot of the semi-formal sporrans, if put on with the right jacket, tie etc. can look a lot more formal than they are. A non-formal sporran usually only looks best dressed down for casual day wear.

In Scotland everybody wears a sporron with kilts, I have 2 a dayware sporron and a semiedress sporron which I wear to special events , I also tend to wear it when I have my blackwatch kilt on. I use my plain sporran during the day and when I go to church, sometimes at home if I have a kilt on I dont bother with the sporron but if I go out I put it on.

I think whether or not to wear a sporran is a personal choice. I always wear a sporran with my traditional kilts. In my opinion, the sporran and the traditional kilt compliment each other as far as appearance goes. Of course, if your are wearing one of the non-traditional kilts that have several pockets, you may not need a sporran, and these kilts may actually look better without one.

What are trousers, and what does a zipper do?

On my tradtional tartan kilts I always wear a sporran- even when just staying local ... on my Utilikilts I never wear a sporran.
