Welcome Beth (maybe not the best thread to be on but the best Kilt site)

heheh..I dunno. I feel pretty at-home on this thread after the past couple of months. ..and I'm certainly ecstatic about the outcome of everything...it was a hard-won fight. I'm just glad it didn't have to go any further..
What I would like to say about it all..
I think we need to be thankful for the outcome. The board acted honorably and forthrightly in their decisions. They could not change the original event, but they responded in a respectful manner. I thanked them on behalf of Clan Gunn, the Warmacks and the Scottish community at-large for their compassion and wisdom in their decisions. I also told them that they had a beautiful town and that by embracing the heritages of their children, they would help them to better understand themselves and remember where they came from which would help them to grow into strong adults, helping to maintain the sanctity of their hometown. I also thanked them for living up to their mission statement of "igniting the desire for learning and constant improvement."
As far as McClard...he hid in the corner the entire meeting..right next to the police officer. He made no eye contact and never spoke a word. He was an utter coward. I have very little faith in his leadership ability, and as an educator myself, I take issue with his lack of insight in handling the entire matter. I rather imagine he was told to keep his mouth shut rather than risk further enlarging his mouth to his shoe size...but from his behavior during that entire evening, I highly doubt he is one of the "GREATS" of education. He has yet to face Nathan in person. When Nathan works in the office, he keeps his door shut and does not come out.
Oh, and if he had been on my staff, I would have fired him post haste. I don't apologize for expecting more from my coaches than that which he exhibited at any single step of the way. The lessons he imparts to his students and staff are: arrogance, intolerance, and cowardice.
The school board, on the other hand, acted in good faith and decisively exhibited ethics and class. THAT is what I think we need to remember most.
..and from meeting the Warmacks and Nathan, I have to say that I was impressed by their earnest natures...in stark comparison to McClard's behavior. I have absolutely no doubt that we backed the correct side.
This was a win for all of us. ..and I have to say, from my vantage point at the center of the storm, I was awed by the incredible outpouring of support and the unbelievably unified stance taken by all of the Celtic communities. It was very touching to see so many hands extended and so many bridges built through all of this..it was an incredible life-experience.
..just my personal observation..

Welcome aboard beth. You'll find some pretty interesting folks here and some interesting conversation. We were all glad the school board behaved as they did. It demonstrated that, on consideration (and advice from council ;) ) they're willing to be reasonable and even go the extra mile. All things considered, I wonder how McClard described the event to them to start with. Seems to me it was likely a pile of fabrication. Score one for the good guys. 8-)

A good outcome. Most importantly, the kid can wear his kilt to the prom. I hope he acquires or rents the right jacket and accoutrments to do it right.
If the school boards in Missouri are like the ones in New York, they are elected from the whole community. A weasel like McClard must be SEETHING over the fact that these people, not "professional educators" like himself, slapped him down.

Bob..if everyone lives up to their pledged donations, he should be fully decked out by Prom. The only piece we are missing is headgear, and I believe we have enough in the kilt fund to cover that. I'll have to check with Mike.
..but we delivered some of the items to him when we were up there for the board meeting. He got his kilt pin, clan badge, a pair of kilt hose, the book "So you're going to wear a kilt," and various other items. Other items being made will take abit longer go get to him..but he should have them by May, no problem.

No, most importantly, other students will be able to wear theirs. As someone else pointed out on another thread, he went the extra mile. He could've been satisfied with "Ok, you have special permission to wear it to your prom," but he insisted on extending that right to everyone.
This kid made a difference in his community, and I'd be willing to bet it won't be the last time. I salute him, and everyone involved on the ground there. Well done.
