I have to admit it seems kind of funny how much time and effort I am putting forth to make sure my kilt fits correctly. I would never devote this amount of time and money to make sure a pair of pants fit correctly.

I appreciate everyone’s advice on this fitment issue. However I still feel like it’s a bit too long. I called Rocky today to order a belt, buckle, sporran, and sporran holders. I asked his opinion on the photos as well, I am thinking of having him make a semi-trad for me. He said it might be a touch long, but that all that matters is how I feel about wearing it. I thought that was some sage advice. I am going to take everyone advice and try it on again with the belt and sporran when it gets here. I will post pics again and ask for the rabbles opinions. You guys are very helpful; I truly appreciate all of your help.

One final word on how I think it should look. Here is a pic I stole from RonPaul. To me they should fit like his new USAK fits him. Now maybe its because he is skinny like I used to be and that is what I am seeing in my head or maybe the kilt laying differently. I really don’t know.

You know, the length looks pretty good to me in your picture, but if you still think it needs hemming, it only takes about 18-20 stiff drinks to hem it up !!!

    Be well,

If I can also make a suggestion.

Go to the Freedom Kilts section of this forum and have a look at the "How to measure yourself" video.

Don't pay any attention to the slope part, that is only for my Contemporary Style Kilts. But the part where I show the three waist heights of kilts may help you to understand the differences.

Also pay attention to where I show how to measure for the Fell length. Then check your kilt and see if the Fell is in the same approx. location.
A Traditional Style Kilt should have a Fell that is 1/3 the of the Drop of the kilt. Or 1/3 the distance from the bottom of the hem to the center of the top straps.

Then, to find your natural waist get a belt or piece of webbing and cinch it around yourself just under your ribs at the side and just covering your shortribs in the back. Cinch in in fairly tight. Then walk around for about 10 min.. Sit down a few times and squat a couple of times. You will find the belt will settle into a natural place on your body slightly above your naval in the front and just covering your shortribs in the back. That is your natural waist and that is the place the top straps should be.

To me, the waist looks way to low. Add a PC and waistcoat, and within 30 minutes his shirt will be sticking out between the kilt & jacket, especially if he dances. As I said; if you want hip-huggers, wear blue jeans.

Exactly. Sean, that Stillwater is very nearly the perfect length for you when you wear it correctly. You're still in a blue jeans mindset. You should get over that.
