Hello Rifleman

Being a newbie myself, I'm sure you can get much better answers from someone else about this. But I'll take a stab at it. Traditional kilts come in "tartans"....basically the design.
According to Webster's; Tartan:
1. a woolen or worsted cloth woven with stripes of different colors and widths crossing at right angles, worn chiefly by the Scottish Highlanders, each clan having its own distinctive plaid.
2. a design of such a plaid known by the name of the clan wearing it.
3. any plaid.
Most tartans are associated with a specific clan, group, district, etc. When I picked up my MacPherson Hunting Modern at the antique store, I had no idea what the tartan was. So I found a tartan finder at
http://www.thetartanbox.com/Tartans/Tartan-Finder.htm and started going through all of the tartans on file there until I found mine. Took a little while. LOL That's my most basic knowledge. Hope it was helpful.
