Actually, I can think of several times a year that I'd need something more formal for wearing with my kilt.

But if he’s going to a black tie event a suit wouldn’t be appropriate. If it’s the sort of thing you’d rent a tux for I’d just go out and rent a PC w/ vest for the night. Personally I got a black Argyll with 5 button vest as it fits in at all but the most formal affairs (then I just rent a PC).

It is a black tie event (read that as "tuxedos required"), so a suit won't cut it. On the other hand, the nearest place to rent a PC is almost 100 miles away.

You can do a PC rental by mail. If you want to PM me I may be able to help you, we have kilt rental suppliers we work with for Scottish weddings.

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep that in mind, if nothing else works out. I'd like to try and find a local solution first, though.

I received my black eton jacket today. I think it can be modified into something kilt-worthy by the dinner (which is on November 3rd, I have been informed).

Glad the jacket came in, once it is kilt worthy I would love to see the pictures. Have you found chrome buttons yet?

I've found a source for buttons online. I'm trying to find them locally first (probably this weekend). I try to deal locally, instead of over the internet, whenever possible. The sleeves are a touch long (luckily, I know someone who can fix that). Otherwise it fits fine, and looks good. It'll look better once the buttons are changed.
Now, for bare minimums, I need a black bow tie, and a vest, or proper belt and dress buckle.

Well for a dress belt and buckle you could go for the one from Stillwater I am sure it would get to you quickly.

For a bow tie I went to a local high end menswear shop, and got a self tie I also have one that I picked up from a tuxedo rental place that was already tied before I learned how to tie a bow tie.
The difference was that the rental place clip tie was about $8.00 and the self tie was about $50.00
