I couldn't agree more, David! The more of them I see, the more I think they look like women's blouses - apart from the one Tony was wearing in Austria! That is a nicely subdued pattern with no clashing colours and even I MIGHT wear one like it - but only with a plain-coloured kilt!!
[PS: I am "an older man" but they is absolutely no way I could get away with wearing the typical, garishly-coloured, in-your-face Hawaiian shirt. If I did I would look an utter twat!]

But .. you should take a gander at the state tartan, not one hibiscus in sight.

Hawaiian shirts should be open most of the way and hanging out. So says I, just another old guy with a beard who doesn't have too many clothing rules.

Given that some objections to the Hawaiian shirt expressed in this thread seem to apply equally whether the shirt is worn with a solid colored kilt or p*nts, I guess we've discovered that this is highly subjective question to which one must search their own soul (or closet) for the answer.

¿¿¿¿ You mean it's OK for me to call you a "wanker or pillock" ????

Lemme see. A tropical shirt draws attention to itself.
And a kilt…
I think…
That’s a good-looking tropical shirt!
It looks good tucked in!
I like that the black background matches the kilt.
I’d probably do a roller buckle rather than the rectangle.
And a Tiki kilt pin, representing “Clan Tiki Bar” of course.
There are lots of tropical “shadow prints” that would look good also.
Sideways to Topic Tale:
I go off and on with prints. Say in alternate summers. Last summer I was favoring double-flap pocket solid-colored shirts when I bought my first kilt (an AmeriKilt). The first stranger’s comment I received kilted was not “the question” but rather: “Hey, you’ve even got the right shirt. Would you come with me so that I can show my husband? I want him to buy a kilt.” So I went and gave my first speech about kilts. Not a bad start as a kilt advocate, particularly as self-conscious as I was on my first public display.
