Tell that chap,if you bump into him again, that Jock from Inverness-shire says it OK for you to wear your Balmoral with that sporran. You may also add a few words of your own too!
Balmorals are not seen that often being worn by us Scots, apart from the army and pipe bands,I wear a Balmoral daily which is rare here. The clan badge on the sporran is not a usual thing for us either. How many times do you need to tell the world what clan you belong to?
The Glengarry is not seen at all, other than bands etc,and anybody who has spent a day trying to keep the wretched thing on, will tell you that the bin is the best place for them.

In the videos on the BBC's website, the guy from 21st century kilts talks about mixing historical items such as a jacobite shirt and a tailored kilt. Personally, I have no problemwith that, but he makes a point.

I note that you wear that bonnet and sporran with other kilts(tartans?).The one thing that will raise more than an eyebrow is, say for example, wearing a Macleod tartan and having a Lamont clan badge on your bonnet and sporran.Doing that sort of thing is not and should not be done.

I agree with both of you on this (& no, beanies don't count -- though I wear an old Army watch cap during the winter ).
It's a shame.
I have some greaser buddies (retro hot rodders) who have taken to not leaving the house without either a flatcap, fedora (Sinatra style) or other on their head, so maybe there's hope...
At anyrate I use to frequently wear a plain balmoral rather kilted or not. Never really received a negative comment either. Did get a lot of favorable ones!
Like Ryan, now that I have my 8-panel "Newsboy" ("Gatsby", etc), it rarely leaves my head I love the thing to death & have received numerous favorable comments about it from the ladies in particular (mostly the 20-somethings...talk about an ego boost! ).
Continue to wear yours with pride, and often! Who knows? Maybe we can start a new hat wearing trend?

I wear my Balmoral quite often and have never had any such comments.

Being here in the sunny south, as well as "hair challenged" (bald), I usually wear a hat outside. Otherwise, I get a nasty sunburn on top of my head. It may not look the best, but it is definitely less painful.

Since we lose more heat from our heads than from other parts of our bodies, hats can be important to wear when it's cold. And in warmer climes, they keep the sun off.
But then, my grandfather had dozens of hats/caps, and I have inherited both the hats and the inclination to wear them.

A fine turnout and you wear it well, standing tall.
