He definetely needs a bow tie with it. The appearance in the picture is both sloppy and unprofessional looking, I know it is a rehearsal for how it will look when the prom comes. Shoes need to be highly polishes, no wrinkles in shirt jacket or kilt, gig line (shirt, jacket, waistcoat, and belt) straight, and SC medals in order as well as clean and straight.

I may just be overly critical though. As a former E-5 in the Navy one thing that still irks me is when someone mixes Military Dress Uniforms and "Civilian" attire, I see it as disrespectful to the Military.

I'll agree with this part of what Mr. Simpson has said... as a former Second Class Petty Officer (E-5) myself, I would like to remind your buddy that he's representing the sea cadets, and by extension, the US Navy, in the public eye. He needs to look sharp, not sloppy, and the best way to do that is through the steps mentioned above.

As for mixing civilian and military attire... well, that's a whole 'nother discussion, which I'm sure we've had before here on X-Marks.

I can overlook it this time since he is wearing a kilt.

Just make sure the uniform aspects are squared away and all will be fine.

I am going to hang out with him after school tomorrow and we will work out the big kinks and I will get some decent pics. I understand all your feelings of combination of civilian and military, but right now we are really just trying to get him looking good and in something that is uniform like, that reflects the branch of military and the rank that he holds. thats why he specifically got a USN tartan kilt, and a jacket that he can modify for his rank.
the reason he has a messy shirt is because he just quickly put is on to grab a pic of the jacket mods. he will have a bow tie no worries!

    wing tip shirts

This place has formal wing tip collared shirts and bow ties at the lowest prices I have seen. I have never ordered from them, and at those prices I wouldn't expect the very best quality, but I would think they would do for wearing at least several times over the course of the next few years.

They also have very reasonably priced sets of studs and cuff links.

Well, were both in band and our band uniform for concerts requires tux shirts with wing tip collars and bow ties. so we really already have them.

I think they were like $15.00 at a craft store. (why a craft store? I don't know)

    much better

The uniform is coming together nicely.

You are right about the insignia on the right sleeve, I should have remembered that as the Sea Cadets were at the NOSC this weekend. Congratulations on being the LPO, that makes him THE senior Petty Officer [most senior person present at that time and location] not A senior Petty Officer [not to get into a huge off topic about rank structure but that is E7/ Chief in the Navy]

To answer some concerns expressed as to the "uniformity" of this effort. The Sea Cadets, as mentioned or alluded to previously, are a student auxiliary of the Navy and they wear the standard uniforms with their own insignia. There is precedence in all branches of the military for a kilted mess dress. here is a nice page of examples from a site mentioned elsewhere here today:
    http://www.alexismalcolmkilts.com/1089/1098.html

Alot/ most/ all of the "never seen that done" sentiment comes from the rarity of seeing junior enlisted in a Mess Dress uniform. It is a uniform that is allowed but is not included in the seabag issue so someone wearing it in the Navy has to buy it and put it together on their own dime which is nigh near impossible on an E5 salary. The normal uniform for an E5 at a Dinning Out or Dinning In would be the Dress Blues with full medals [Cracker Jack]

    cheers
    Chief

    Casey,

Your friend has GOT to start posting here on his own, so we can know who he is. Then you can focus on posting pics of your own kit.

Have a blast at your prom, both of you.

I got one of those once. It was, more or less, :crap:.

I suggest Uniformalwearhouse.com. That's what I used to outfit myself for my senior prom, and I highly recommend them.
